The wait to get the van fixed was in vain in the end......long story. But by now we were well and truly ready to hit the road again and head north. We drove about three and a half hours north of Perth before reaching Dongara which we had planned to revisit after passing through in early March. The venue for our stay was the Dongara Denison Beach Holiday Park and if you ever get the chance make sure you stay here for a night or two. The Park is set right on the beach with the chalets actually overlooking the coast. There are a few paths close by to enjoy the beautiful coast and you can hear the waves crashing in on the beach from your campsite. Dongara is a sleepy little coastal town but just ... read more

Wed Aug 19, Perth to Dongara This is a travel log and while a personal account about travelling it is not here to discuss every detail of encounters with old friends. Suffice to say I received wonderful hospitality from my old friends Steve, Helen and family and the rest is between me and them. Okay to say one thing more, they define old friends - people you can not see for years, but with whom you remain always in synch. Something to be treasured. After coffee with the treasures this morning the motorcycle journey proper began. My initial trepidations about the handling and weight of the BMS 1200 were put to rest as I got more comfortable with the machine and very soon got to like it and after an hour my rear end told me ... read more

Day 43 (Tuesday 02-June-09, NJJ) Very quiet day. Did bit of shopping in the morning, laundry at camp at lunchtime. Lay on the beach for an hours or so. Sunset at the beach at camp again. Jay cooked steaks and veg' on the barbie. It was one of the best meals we've had in Australia. We still had a few litres of wine left in the box from Jay's birthday so we finished that off whilst watching episodes of Family Guy on the laptop outside the van. The 'Bird is the word' episode is my favourite and is even more enjoyable after quite a few glasses of wine. ... read more

Day 42 (Monday 01-June-09, NJJ) Journey from Carnarvon to Dongara took most of the day. Stopped along way at Overlander Roadhouse, Billabong Roadhouse and Elephant Hill. At campsite in Dongara got the chairs out and sat at the top of the beach for sunset with a glass of wine each. After shower we walked along the marina area to Southerley's restaurant. Back at the van we had some wine whilst watching the last three episodes of Underbelly.... read more

Today we drove up to the towns of Port Dennison and Dongara to have a little look around and to see if we could find a good fishing spot. Dongara was a really pretty little town with a main street lined with bay fig trees. We had a quick look around the museum - we arrived about five minutes before it was due to close so they kept it open for a little while longer for us. What was really weird about the place was the fact that you could buy gollywogs from some of the shops. I'm sure you can't do that any more. We then drove out to Seven Mile Beach where I tried my hand at a bit of fishing - I was unsuccessful yet again. We camped at a little rest area ... read more

After a train ride through the most desolate parts of this large island-continent, it was good to be back in a large city again. We are both admittedly city dwellers, but certainly don’t mind venturing out into the lesser populated regions. Perth is a city of almost 1.5 million people. If you looked at a map, spotted Perth and looked at its latitude, you would notice it was at about 32 degrees give or take a few degrees and minutes. Then, if you headed west on that same parallel until you hit land again, you would have to go all the way to South Africa across a vast expanse of water, the Indian Ocean. Perth is the only city of any size west of Adelaide, which is over 1650 miles to the east. This is one ... read more

I got up at the butt crack of dawn to catch my very late bus at 7:00 am. In real life, this is not a bad time. This is the time I normally left for work, for instance. But in the world of the backpacker, this is the equivalent of getting up at 3:00am to complete a term paper due that later morning. I was in a mood to meet people, and ended up chatting with most everybody on the bus. It was a good group, and I was a bit rueful of my decision to get off at Dongara (pr. Dong-gra). I would say I was sorry to be leaving them, but that was one of the words that Thou shalt not speak, and so I spake it not. Luckily for me, I was lucky ... read more
