Here we are at Ningaloo Homestead Station Camp Ground tucked in behind a sand dune that leads to the Indian Ocean. We are cooking up enough chow mein to probably feed most people who actually read this blog! Sad to leave Exmouth, but the weather has turned a little and we are experiencing cloud coverage and wind. Not ideal for beach activities. Anyway looking out we see lots of sand dunes with pasture to help feed the 3,000 goats that apparently roam this station. The farmer (camp host!) says that they are tapping into the Malaysian market and sitting on a goldmine. Typical W.A. It’s all about mining!! Anyway it is off to Coral Bay tomorrow, via the dirt road. Not sure about the weather predictions, as most places South are not that warm. Peter here ... read more

Howdy! And then I went to Coral Bay! Soooooooo gorgeous it made the whole OZ thing so much more worthwhile! I arrived on a ridiculously expensive bus from Exmouth and arrived just in time to book in a dive for the next day and have a walk on the beach with a coffee in my hand for sunset. Truly beautiful. Just sitting on that beach watching the birds flying and the sun slowly setting, it was one of those moments when you get humbled by nature. Sounds soppy I know, but it was so lovely I wanted to move there and never leave! I went diving and it was really nice, the staff were great and the boat nice and there were much more life than in Exmouth. A spotter plane sorted us out with a ... read more

Hello! This is a very short one, because there wasn’t enough room in the previous and next photo albums to include them. And the Karijini update was a long one and the swimming with Whale Sharks one will be a long one, so thought I’d give you a break :) Wednesday 2 June - continued - back to Coral Bay After a shower I went down for a nice Vege Burger and was so excited to hear the news that Maff and Emma have booked their trip and that I'll be seeing them in just over a month!!!! Woohoo!!!! Jenny introduced us to her friends Alex and Danny and was excited to show me Danny's jumper that she'd brought back from Peru, it was almost identical to mine so of course I had to go and ... read more

DENHAM TO CORAL BAY Sunday 16th May, we left Denham after breakfast and headed the 330 kms to Carnarvon. This included backtracking 130kms back to the highway. Not much to see except for the wild goats and dead kangaroos on the sides of the road. There must be a hell of a lot of kangaroos as there seemed to be a dead one every 100 yards or so. On the road out there is a dog proof fence to keep the feral animals out of the National Park, with a cattle grid on the road with a sensor that activates a dog barking as anything approaches the grid. It apparently works well. We decided to stay for two nights to catch up on out grocery shopping. Monday 17th May, It was interesting to see so many ... read more

Day 4 Coral Bay We booked a trip yesterday to take a 1 hour tour on a glass-bottomed boat at 9am this morning. Unfortunately, not enough people signed up for it and we instead (paid extra and) upgraded to a 2-hour touring plus snorkelling trip. It should be fun, but it meant we had a couple of hours to kill in which we couldn't really organise anything else, and we're still disappointed at the cost of some activities we'd been looking forward to. Deep sea fishing, swimming with whale sharks and looking for dugongs all lie around the $300 mark, per person. We have to treat this trip as the 'paddle of beer' of the north coast. Each stop is like a sample of ale, starting with the pale ale that is Kalbarri, and moving towards ... read more

Day 3 Leg 3: Monkey Mia - Coral Bay (via Carnarvon) We saw Dolphins!!! You probably guessed that we would, since we were staying at the Dolphin resort, but i'm not sure you understood there would be dolphins here - lol. No monkeys. Feeding happens 3 times a day but you're pretty much guaranteed to see dolphins if you go in the morning. About 5 dolphins turned up, and we all stood in line knee deep in the water, each trying to get a photo while dodging elbows heads and noses with our lenses. The dolphins are quite used to it all, and they swim up and down the line with the DEC rangers and flip over in the water, playing and posing. One of then is called Nikki! (She's 34 and has a baby though, ... read more

Dec 4th - Dec 7th Hitting the open road is the best way to see a country and we were eager to explore the state of Western Australia on our own terms. It took a while to get through the heavy traffic around Perth but soon we were on the open freeway surrounded by nothing but scrubland as far as the horizon in every direction. Simon has been to Perth before and was eager for me to see the Pinnacles which are about 300km away from the city. This is an area of golden desert from which huge chunks of limestone protrude. There are small chunky ones, tall skinny ones and others that stand in little groups. It is quite an unusual sight and we drove around the Pinnacles stopping frequently to take pictures. We had ... read more

Day 192 - Coral Bay We have two birthday boys to give a shout out for today! Bernie we hope you have a great day and that Tez brings you all the sausage rolls you desire! Hopefully we'll speak to you soon! Paul (Blair), happy birthday 'Tap Dance', have a great day me old Haven Mate mucker! Lots of love to both of you from both of us! “Just one more day?” It was the question that both sets of friends independently asked and independantly answered when we woke this morning. And the answer? It was a resounding “Yes”! We’re still waiting to hear back from the Williambury station so staying another day might just swing things in our favour, you never know! At least we will be contactable staying here, we’re pretty sure we’ll loose ... read more

Day 191 - Coral Bay Just as well that we went to bed when we did last night because today was another ‘big day’! It’s Melbourne Cup day, a huge money spinning horse race and this is our first experience of ‘the race that stops the nation’! We’re up reasonably early and I wander down to the campground reception to ask if we can book in for another night. The lovely lady there said we can stay as long as we want but at $30 a night we can’t really afford to hang out here forever!! Another night will do though! There’s a three hour time difference between Western Australia and Melbourne in Victoria, and we're three hours ahead which means the race gets broadcast here at midday. Sadly that means we ‘need’ to be in ... read more

So Coral Bay... the gateway to the Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia's answer to the Great Barrier Reef. Here we had a number of optional extras, meaning my chance to blow a big load of money in one go. Most of my day was spent on the 'Manta Ray' snorkeling trip. This started off with some snorkeling over the reef looking at all the colourful fish and coral in the top couple of metres of the sea. Lots of life there and pretty pristine reefs. I even saw a nurse shark hiding under a ledge. After that we came to main point of the trip- Manta Rays! Being wild animals we weren't guaranteed a sighting, but as it turned out this most definitely wasn't an issue. I got quite a shock when I was snorkeling along and ... read more
