Today we woke up bright and early to head to Coral Bay, a small town along the coast of the Ningaloo Reef. Athena and I were the only certified divers on the trip, and we were looking forward to a day of first snorkelling with Manta Rays, then doing a reef dive. We pulled into Coral Bay before 8AM and Kim took Athena and I into the dive shop. When we got there, however, bad news awaited us. Extreme wind warnings were in effect, and no boats were going out onto the reef today. Can I just say this - DON’T GO TO CORAL REEFS WITH ME!! I BRING BAD LUCK!!! And I’d also like to point out (and this relates to the ‘6’ thing from yesterday) that it was only Athena and I who ... read more

Today was mostly a travel day. We made a stop in the booming metropolis of Carnarvon! We were told it was one of the biggest cities in the area, and that we would be spending about an hour in a SHOPPING MALL. I immediately knew what to expect - “they’ll have a Woolworth’s and a Target,” I declared and wouldn’t you know it, I was BANG ON!! They also had a Woolworth’s liquor and the Target was a special kind of Target - a Target COUNTRY. I didn’t go inside, so I’m not quite sure what the difference is. We arrived at our final destination of a sheep shearing station in the late afternoon. We were greeted with instant luxury - ROOMS with ELECTRICITY!! At this point in my story I should mention that we ... read more

From Denham we enbarked on another 5 hour road trip up to Coral Bay. This included a quick stop off at a place called Shell Bay. As the name suggests, Shell Bay is not made of sand but is made up of millions and millions of little cockle shells which are a brilliant white in colour. The bay was stunning, the whiteness of the shells together with the blue water and sky was amazing. As we drove to coral Bay we noticed more and more dead kangaroos on the side of the road, we think there must have been a roo massacar each night. Kangaroos are not exactly small and if we had hit one it would have made a real mess of the car so we think most of the killings would have come ... read more

We stopped off at the Tropic of Capricorn before arriving at Coral Bay. More highlights - this time under the water in the beautiful Ningaloo reef. It is a fringing reef as there is only a small strip of water between the reef and the shoreline - one of the longest fringing coral reef systems in the world. The Ningaloo reef stretches 260km from Bundegi beach only 5-10m offshore. On our journey towards Coral bay we spotted lots of wedge-tailed eagles. Then we boarded a glass-bottomed boat and had a great view of the amazing corals beneath. We also saw a variety of fish-life, stingrays and even some huge turtles swimming alongside us. Up to 6,000 marine turtles live in the waters of Shark Bay. It is also possible to sometimes see dugongs. Then we jumped ... read more

Well we made it to our most northerly point in WA, Exmouth (that's Ex-mouth not Ex-muth), after another Greyhound nightmare!! Lets just say, 3 hours waiting at a road house in the middle of nowhere between 2am and 5am!! We got here at 8am and are only staying for 1 night, as we have so much else to see in the next 6 weeks. So we didn't hang around and headed straight for the Visitor's Centre, where we booked a Scooter and Snorkelling Tour, as it seemed more fun than just hiring a car again! Exmouth is based at the most northern point of the Ningaloo Reef (which according to good old Lonely Planet rivals the Great Barrier Reef, but with hardly anyone around). The town is pretty quiet and all the good stuff is kind ... read more

Wednesday 6th Dec The surfing up here is shut for the season so rang someone in Denham to learn to Kitesurf and he said he could at the weekend so I’m going to go back to coral bay to spend some time before going back to Denham. I got a lift back down with Tim and Teresa at 5am as they were driving al the way back to Perth. Emma and Nicki- who had come to see the turtle laying also traveled down to Coral bay this morning so the 3 of us went along the beach to meet there friends (including Sean) at an area where the sharks bread. It is just a shallow area of the bay where there are about 30 small sharks swimming around. Thursday 7th Dec Emma and Nicky and some ... read more

Sat 2nd Dec Got up for a 2nd look at the Dolphin feeding which was a lot busier that Fridays and the baby didn’t come so it was luck we drove over early yesterday. Then into the car for a really long and hot drive up to Coral Bay. We arrived about 4pm and went down to the beach and had a quick snorkel. I saw a stingray which was a bit scary as it was in the shallows. The hostel here is fairly big and new concrete blocks but they are friendly. The flys around the eating area are terrible though. The big difference between the West and East coast are the size of the towns, over this side you don’t have a choice of hostel- there is only one at each place. Sunday 3rd ... read more

Dit is een puur toeristische bestemming, met een groot Backpacker Hotel, 2 campings en een winkelcentrum. Een prachtig strand, met schaduwafdakjes, toiletten en douches, en een visreinigingsplaats.
