19-10-09 On the road again !!! By 8am & into a big head wind , this must be one of the windiest parts of the WA coast. We stopped at Minilya Roadhouse & filled up with Gas ($1.05) we did not need petrol which was $1.66 litre. We pushed on literally pushing the wind aside, we turned off 24km’s north of Carnarvon & went the 49km’s to Point Quobba campsite. We had travelled 250 km’s today. Well I did not know what to expect of this place, I knew by lots of reports it was windy, but as at this time of the year it is very hot, the cool wind was a nice change. I would not like to be here in winter though, I would imagine it would be freezing. We drove in & in the camps book you had to pay a fee to stay, we could not see anyone to pay so we went & set up camp. There are sand dunes all the way on the right hand side of the road in front of the beach, we ambled along trying to find a good spot that was a bit sheltered. The sites go for miles
& are very generous in size but all are on sand & most have a fireplace in them & your own track to the beach. On the way in there were all these “Shanty” buildings on sites that people had just erected as holiday shacks we reckon, we went past them & found a spot & parked up. We were set up in no time, getting fast now. We had lunch & went to pay our fees & have a look around, we saw a ranger & as it was off season it was free (that’s a change) , he explained where we could fish as we were on the fringe of the marine park. Well talk about a ruggard coast line , just amazing, we were at the place known as “The Blowhole” the waves were smashing onto the rocks & Den went to see the holes that were causing the jets of water to shoot into the air. Well worth seeing, the colour of the water & the rocks makes this coastline different again from anything we have seen. There was a little bay protected from the wind where you could snorkel & swim , with bush shelters
set up that you could sit under, with blue-green water against the ruggard rocks it was just beautiful. We then drove back past the van & on through the maze of roads & empty campsites, the road went for miles & the coastline & rough seas were just beautiful. We came back & took the dogs for a swim in the beach through our own walking track at the back of the van. They headed for the water straight away & it was quiet warm, Jessie is getting game & jumping over the waves, but it was so rough she got picked up & dumped, we were laughing, it did not knock a bump out of her. We walked a long way down the beach & the sand was very soft & a real effort to walk on, my feet were telling me enough is enough & because of the slope to the water my back was joining in the chorus . I hobbled back but it was very refreshing walking that far. I prepared fish, salad & fried vegies then we had a drink & decided to go fishing just on dusk. We had not been beach fishing before
& what a circus by me. The wind was so strong that every time I cast my rod out the bait & sinker just came straight back at me, when I did manage to get it out 3 metres I caught sea weed. I think we need to ring Dad & get some advice on beach fishing, maybe a heavier sinker might have helped. Plus the tide was coming in which did not help. I strained my back more by trying to chuck the rod into the wind. Den had more luck & caught 2 small fish he chucked back. We were both in the water nearly to our bums & getting very cold, I have up & came up to have a shower & put tea on, den was not far behind me freezing as well. We had a nice tea & watched TV,, the satellite dish has been worth the money, we have used it a lot , as we are so far away from other people we can have the generator going a bit longer. We crashed about 9pm all of us had enough sun & sand today.
20-10-09 Well 6 months on the road today, can
you believe it . I had a lovely sleep in this morning, even the girls did not want to rise we had to force them to go & have a walk at 9am , it had been 12 hours since they had gone. We both decided to sit outside in the sun this morning & read a book & relax, very enjoyable. It is probably 25 deg today & still blowing a strong wind. I am having a quiet day as my back & feet are a bit worse for wear. I caught up with my diary & downloaded my photos to name & date them. We both prepared tea & cooked a casserole in the Cobb, it was yummy & I taught Den how to make a damper, he did good. We then took our drinks down to the beach & watched the sun set, it was cool but nice. It has been great to go to bed & sleep all night as it is cooler. We have enjoyed our couple of days at Point Quobba, I know people might think that strange, but it has been different, quiet & relaxing. Off to Carnarvon tomorrow.
