English I am in Corryong at the moment, where the
Corryong Cup takes place. The comp is supposed to be a fun comp, and novice pilots are explicitly invited. There are two different classes, Open and Floater. Seperate tasks are set for both of them.
I arrived here on Friday, with Steven, the comp organizer, and Stuie, Al, and Nikola who is one of the five girls that fly the comp. We set our tents up at a free campsite right next to a river. It is a very nice place, and as it is free, there are no showers. But we've got the river, which is enough.
On Saturday, we had a practice day. There are about 75 pilots here, the comp is full. No specific task was set, and people flew wherever they wanted to fly. I got off fairly late because I was having a bit of a hassle with my material. I had a new radio and headset that I needed to get into my helmet and harness, and I needed to find out how to operate it. Then I slipped on some leaves on a slope, fell onto my bum and broke my phone.

... on the way to Corryong Great, things you don't really need. Finally in the air, I wasn't very lucky, caught a few thermals and managed to stay up for a while, then had to go and land in a paddock that looked nice from above, but turned out to be quite uneven when I went into final glide. Conditions here are quite difficult anyway. It is windy and rough, and especially landings can be very tricky as the wind is really switchy and the ground is really hot.
Sunday was the first comp day. The Floater task was set from Mount Elliot to Towonga, back to Mount Elliot, and then to Khancoban airstrip. The task for the Open class went from Mount Elliot to Walwa and then to Khancoban. I got to fly fairly late because I needed to get a new pair of wheels on my basebar - unfortunately my great wooden ones are not working well any more. As my navigating GPS can't be connected to the computers here, I also had to enter all the waypoints manually. But finally, I was airborne. I worked my way around launch for quite a while, not really getting to cloudbase. Then a thermal that

I was already preparing for an uphill landing right at the bottom of the hill, with my harness already open, when I caught a nice and smooth thermal that took me all the way to cloudbase. From there, I started off towards Towong and made the first turnpoint. On my way back to Mount Elliot, I was in a nice thermal again that took me to cloudbase. When I headed back on course, the vario wouldn't stop screaming. I started getting sucked into the cloud. I pulled the bar in as far as I could, trying to head for the edge of the cloud, with my vario still screaming. I struggled for quite a while, until I finally found some sink. Never in my hanggliding career I was happy to find sink, but in that moment, I was. I flew all the way back to Elliot, arrived there quite high, and could probably easily have made it to goal. But the paddocks on the way there looked pretty scary to me,

Anyway, in the end it turned out that I came third that day. In the Floater class Gregor Forbes won the day, in the Open class Hugh Alexander.
On Monday, I did not fly due to strong wind and really dodgy conditions at launch. I packed up my glider after waiting for conditions to improve for hours. Soon after I left, launch was closed due to the strong wind. The top of Mount Elliot is really dusty and dirty, so the first thing I did when I came back to the campsite was going for a swim in the river. Now I feel a bit cleaner 😉. I will tell you about the results as soon as they are out.

That's where we go swimming every day.
