Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Aahhhh!
Imagine if you had all the cities of the world over for a big dinner party. You know, Paris would be overdressed and snooty, NY would be brash, loud and eat all the food and London would just be too posh to speak anyone! Well, Sydney would be the laid back, cheery guy that you would warm to straight away and probably spend the rest of the night with laughing at everyone else. I didnt really know what to expect of OZ and truth is, probably didnt have great expectations, but its really blown me away! I turned up in Sydney [View Full Entry]

Wine Tasting
Wine Tasting
This was the last stop called Chandon. It's a famous champagne producer that was actually wine with bubbles. Very good!
Melbourne is a great place to explore with lots of alleyways that wind through the city's grid. Also, it's cold here and actually feels like winter! We have taken a couple of day trips: one to see the Penguin Parade on Phillips Island, a nightly ritual where a thousand penguins return from the ocean and waddle into burroughs, and a second tour to go wine tasting in Yarra Valley, mmmmmm. We were not allowed to take pictures of the penguins because the flashes are apparently harmful and daze the little guys (they are only a foot tall and weigh 2.2 pounds!!), [View Full Entry]

We arrived this morning to 45 mph winds in Melbourne! We stepped off the plane and immediately wondered if we were back in Chicago. We didn't mind the wind because it cleared the air after Tim had to sit next to "Smelly Jim" for an hour on the plane. The cold winds have not stopped us from roaming around downtown and trying to find live music for tonight. Melbourne is an extremely artistic town with loads of galleries, shops and live music. Tomorrow we're going to do a walking tour of all the sites and end the day with a night [View Full Entry]

Hello all We've just arrived back in Australia on a trip to see our daughter Claire who emigrated to Melbourne in February 2009 We travelled via 2 nights in Singapore and had a great flight on the new A380 Airbus. We were originally booked with Emirates but got an offer on Singapore Airlines that saved us a lot of money even allowing for the cancellation charges to Emirates. We could have flown direct from Manchester but had the chance of the A380 by going through Heathrow. We've always tried to avoid Heathrow but as the connection from Manchester was through Terminal [View Full Entry]

With less than two hours stopover in Hong Kong we headed for the Qantas lounge anyway. By the time that you are processed as a transit passenger it doesn’t leave very much time at all before you are re-boarding the plane! For the last couple of days in London I kept thinking there was something that I wanted to check on the internet. Somewhere over Russia I remembered that the project that I had been working on at the office before going on holiday was supposed to ‘go live’ on 30 June. Gosh, I must have been having a great holiday [View Full Entry]

I can't believe we made it. What a journey. 5 days of travelling, 2 cancelled flights, lost baggage, zero sleep. But we're home, safe, sound and happy. Our flight from Caracas was cancelled and we spent a long, boring day in the airport waiting for an evening flight that went via Lima to Santiago. At 5am in Santiago we discovered they had lost our backpacks and of course we had left Venezuela in the searing heat wearing shorts to arrive amidst the beautiful snow capped mountains of Santiago, Chile. Nice. Luckily we had our fleeces and our little Vi made travel [View Full Entry]

Having left the Blue Mountains (which, judging by her last blog, Helen was very pleased to do), we started the trip down south towards the state of Victoria. First though, we had a quick stop in Canberra, the capital of Australia. Oh, wait! Before I tell you about Canberra, I haven’t updated you on my ‘list of animals I want to see before I leave Australia’ have I? Sorry about that, this is where we currently stand… 1) Koala - Seen in a tree at a caravan park 2) Cassowary - Seen at Cape Tribulation 3) Platypus - Seen in the [View Full Entry]
