Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

By the seaside... Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
The first thing that struck me about Melbourne was it's tram network. Never having visited a city with working trams before, this gave the whole city a different atmosphere - with wide roads and relatively little traffic on them, making it easy to get about by foot - not to mention the curious way the cars have to turn. In order to turn right, they have to remain in the left hand lane, then swing out when the coast is clear(ish). Much like Sydney, Melbourne had it's fair share of backpackers and hostels, and plenty of languages other than English were [View Full Entry]

For as long as i can remember Christmas day has been spent sat in front of the tv with a throbbing head in freezing cold Manchester. This year i got to spend it in 30 degree heat on Torquay beach (about 3hrs south of Melbourne) splashing around in the sea and eating weeners from the BBQ. It is a strange feeling to be away from home at x-mas eat no home cooked turkey/pototoes and recieve no presents :o( sob sob. So i stole myself a little blowup santa from the hostel which served to be the only reminder that it was [View Full Entry]

St Kilda I thought was a nice place. It was here that I realised I wanted to study and live in Australia. Why not? I mean it is my nationality, I wouldn't need a visa here. I loved Melbourne. It looked clean, it looked easy to get around and the people were friendly. The cake shops were lovely. We went to ski at Mt Buller but honestly, the snow was horribly icy, the slopes were crowded and it wasn't the best place to ski. The countryside around Victoria was beautiful, all the sunsets seemed to explode in highlights of golds and [View Full Entry]

After the last 3 months travelling on the Oz experience Bus along the east coast we caught a flight down to Melbourne in oder to replenish our battered bank accounts. Even though i am on holiday i feel a sense of holiday blues. the east of Australia is one of the best areas i have ever travelled and i have had an amazing 3 months doing it. Melbourne seems nice though, abit chilly compared to Cairns. I like the trams.... I arrived in my thongs and shorts from 33oC Cairns to 4oC Mebourne: not a wise thing to do. Now living [View Full Entry]

Surprises! Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
Finally I left London on the 21st of October.....10 months to the day that I had arrived and secretly flew into to Brisbane (well secretly to everyone not living in the UK - though there were a few in on the secret). Spent a week catching up with close friends (namely Shan and Emma) and my adopted family up there. Great seeing everyone again! I then flew into Melbourne on the 31st of Oct funnily enough it coincided with Cup Week in Melbourne..... The aim was to fly in a surprise my parents. Things didn't go quite to plan. I got [View Full Entry]

Jean and I looking happy in the freezing cold winter morning. I've got KC's jacket on - double protection. Hah.
After a night of partying with the Interior Design students, I got picked up at 3am in the morning by KC and friends to head to Dandenong Mountains, 40km from Melbourne. No notice as usual! Jon was here visiting and wanted to see the sights so off we went to the mountains in the middle of winter 2001. We arrived close to 5am, took a walk in the freezing cold. The sight was amazing but too dark for our cameras to capture any decent photos. As the sun came up we headed to check out Puffing Billy, the 100-year-old steam train [View Full Entry]

Welcome to the travel Blog of Simon and Shelley from Melbourne, Australia. We thought we would do something a bit different and give you a quick rundown on our travelling history, how we met and our plans for the future (plus we have a heap of photos and videos that we need any excuse for posting). Firstly we will start with Shelley’s first adventure overseas. In 1997 she decided to take some time off Uni and head over to the U.S.A. to travel around and also work as a camp counsellor. She spent about 3 months there, visiting the west coast [View Full Entry]

What's an Aussie camping trip without a barbie?
Camping trip to Wilson's Prom in Gippsland, with the cell group from C.O.C. We stayed at a camping site at Tidal River - fully equipped with toilets, hot showers and barbecue facilities - Aussies can't live without their barbies! Mike brought his tents from home - we were all pretty new with camping so he did most of the work putting up the tents. Squeaky Beach is possibly the cutest beach I've ever seen or more importantly, heard. This beach literally squeaks as you walk on the sand! It's so fun!! I could jog on this beach just to hear the [View Full Entry]
