Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Hi everybody. Sorry it has been so long since the last post but school is keeping me very busy at the moment. My classes, while very interesting are a lot of work! But it hasnt been all reading and writing, I have had a couple of fun distractions from the books. On Thursday I went to the Sarah Mclachlan concert at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne. Not only did I get to see a fantastic concert, I got to meet Sarah herself! She was extremly nice and I got both a picture with her, and she signed one of my [View Full Entry]

After enjoying the sunshine of the wild west of Perth. I hae moved on to the south east of the country to the city of Melbourne. At first i was a bit skeptical of the place but must admit it is the cultural mecca of the country. All cultures live here like alot of the rest of the country however they really seem to mix really well here with all the excellent festivals and parades that go on here. The weather was really good for the enitre week and managed to get out and about to the city, st kilda [View Full Entry]

I've just sat down to write another long overdue entry to my travel log, and noticed a cockroach out of the corner of my eye. The little beggar ran underneath the table top and is probably thinking about running up my short leg. So excuse me if i'm a little distracted and the words don't make much sense. I wondered why this internet cafe was so cheap... It's nearly a month since my last entry and in that time I worked a week with the blokes from Taiyo. Fortunately they had some other guys down from Cairns and they weren't nearly [View Full Entry]

Just back from Melbourne. Had a brilliant weekend down there and managed to meet up with everyone on Friday and Sunday nights for 2 wild sessions! The Grand Prix was excellent, noisy, but excellent! We moved positions during the race to check out a different vantage point. It's difficult to make out what is happening in the race unless you are in a spot where you can see a giant screen. Melbourne weather gets a double thumbs down, can't wait to get back to nice warm reliable Brisbane! Stayed with Ruth's great-aunt, which was great. Dale (aka Crazy D) drove us [View Full Entry]

As most you know by now, I have arrived safe and sound in Melbourne. Sorry it took me so long to write but the past week has been pretty busy, settling in and learning my way around. The flight over was very long but otherwise uneventful. In all I was in the air for a little over 21 hours, but suprisingly the jet lag wasnt that bad at all. (Tip for those thinking of coming over, make sure you fly in mid to late afternoon. It makes a huge difference.) Originally I had wanted to fly directly into Melbourne but [View Full Entry]

Once more we are out in the South Pacific, cruising up (toward the equator) from Melbourne to Sidney, Australia. We toured Melbourne yesterday and stopped by their WW2 Memorial, an impressive marble edifice with a large military parade. It seems it was the Aussie Memorial Day, which is Feb. 13 (nobody seems to know why). Then back to the ship for a hurried lunch, after which we were bussed to the local polo grounds at Werribee Park for the England-Australia match. All we knew about polo was what we saw in Pretty Woman, so this was a new experience indeed. But [View Full Entry]

Courtesy of work, I just spent two weeks back home in Melbourne, with a day trip to Sydney. It was very strange being home - probably the worst culture shock I've ever experienced. It wasn't just the extreme quiet of the streets compared to Bangkok, being out in the 'burbs again, the cleanliness, the lack of pollution, the weather, the wide streets, the different trees, everyone looking very white and overweight, the dreadful accents, but, most of all, the relaxed and comfortable nature of life, the much higher cost of goods and services, and the ability to spend lots of money [View Full Entry]

It really has been far too long since I last wrote hasn’t it? To avoid one monolithic journal, I am going to try break recent events down into two more relatively huge rants. I figure if I didn’t write now, I would soon lose some of the memories, emotions, thoughts and findings of recent times. Now we can’t have that! The most logical place to pick up since where I last left off would be the build-up surrounding my trip home and the time spent back in Edithvale. So the trip home….. Didn’t someone once ask, can you ever truly go [View Full Entry]
