Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Hey. Hopefully this blog will be a little interesting and alot easier than the actual packing of all the gear and equipment. At the moment we are deciding if it will take 3 days or 4 to get everything into the camper. The other option is to leave one of the kids behind and use the space for the spare oil filters.....oil filters are important. Anyway...we look forward to sending you some stuff and hope you enjoy. Cheers. Ange, Geoff, Lloyd, Molly & Lucy. [View Full Entry]

Meet Han Brit Owen Queen Victoria Market Lots of stuff to buy. I met up with Han, Brit and Owen at the Queen Victoria Market today. It’s much busier on a Sunday! I was hoping to find some souvenirs to send home but was having too much fun making fun of all the cheesy stuff on sale that I didn’t really get around to buying anything. We bought a few snacks and food and then caught the tram to Brit and Owen’s place. They have a really cool place that they decorated really funkily. We dished up all of the snacks, [View Full Entry]

It’s really sunny! Walk around the CBD Yum Cha is yummy! I took advantage of the “free” breakfast provided by the hostel this morning. Basically free toast and a cuppa tea or coffee. Geesh. I really miss my honey on peanut butter toast. But I guess beggars can’t be choosers, right? It’s weird, breakfast is only served between the hours of 8 and 9AM. Anyhoo, Di and I sat around shooting the breeze a bit and then used our free 10 minute token for the internet. Since the weather was super nice we took advantage of the sun and did a [View Full Entry]

Me and My Family

Hi all, it's time we say fair the well to some of our good friends with a little wine, dinner & a classic movie. It was lots of laughs & a little bit of danger with the wild & slightly hyperactive hound of our friend. But it was all ok in the end & Princess Sparkle got away unscathed. Only 7 more days until we set off so we will wait until then to update you all. Good Journy Sarah & P.S. [View Full Entry]

3 guys, 3 bikes, 30,000 kms, 9 months, 16 countries.....We are off in a couple of weeks so I want to get this up and running. Three of us and our bikes are flying out to LA and then we're going to ride right down to the southernmost point...then come halfway back. Already there's talk of hanging in and getting up to Bolivia and Peru....seems a shame to go all that way and not finish off. However, the conditions of bikes, bums and banks may determine what happens after Santiago. [View Full Entry]

Visiting Brian ... and Helen and Lucian Elaine and I have flown to Melbourne for the Queens Birthday Long Weekend to celebrate the 30th anniversary of my graduation from Portsea. About 20 of us will be gathering. Some arriving tonight. Some, like me, making the trip down the Mornington Peninsula tomorrow. Today, though, is really Elaine's shopping day - the sweet siren song of the outlet centres is calling, and I know that there is little point in trying to resist. Last year she planned to come down for the weekend with an old friend, and somehow they ended up in [View Full Entry]
