Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Somebody stole 2 hours because we woke at 9.30 realised we could have a lie in then woke at 11.30 when we had to be the other side of town at 11.45 for the Phillip Island tour! Power walked (very Harold Bishop esque) to Flinders St Station for 12.05, having missed the bus but getting there just as the neighbours bus pulled in. It was the lady who had given us the tour the day before and she phoned the office to get the bus to wait for us there while we caught a taxi over there. We're so lucky :) [View Full Entry]

We couldn't decide whether to go to Kangaroo Island when we get to Adelaide or Phillip Island in Melbourne - both are full of all the wildlife we want to see but Phillip Island is smaller. Unfortunately tours of Kangaroo Island are all 2 days and just getting onto and off the island in a campervan is $140 and the park rangers who are meant to do tours were really unhelpful when I rang whereas a Phillip Island tour was done by the same people who do the Neighbours tour for $85. Having decided to do this though we found out [View Full Entry]

Melbourne! Finally I am here. I passed through Melbourne on my way from Sydney to Adelaide with Korhan, 3 months ago. For several reasons, we didn't stay even one day, and I was hoping to have the time to come back, even if it was going to be in the winter. So on a nice sunny day I left Noosa, took the bus to Brisbane airport, and prepared myself to freeze in Melbourne. Instead, I had a beautiful week, not even one day of rain and relatively warm weather (around 18 degrees). In my first days in the city I didn't [View Full Entry]

Woke up with a JCB outside the window and got some very odd looks going for a shower! We also booked into a daytime Neighbours tour with backpackerking.com.au, so we went and caught the bus by Flinders St station. It was a bit rubbish at first - we just about recognised the outside of the school but we weren't even allowed in the studios. But it was all made up for by our visit to Ramsey street, which is a real street called Pin Oak Court in West Melbourne with real people living three - in number 30 is an english [View Full Entry]

We certainly were if you like freezing cold! I think they were talking about the lake and forest which were beautiful though! We eventually persuaded ourselves to get out of our sleeping bags and drove down the coast and stopped for breakfast in a town near the Snowy River of 'Snowy River: The McGregor Saga' fame. Along the ninety mile beach and we were in Melboune for mid-afternoon! It was quite fun describing the van over the phone to pay the toll. We met the lady who runs the melbourne wicked depot and she said we could use her shower so [View Full Entry]

The Story of Sempi Villagers Presentation by Salai KTH When I was between 5 to10-year-old my grand father talked to me about wonderful stories. I never forget that stories because my grand father had talked to me several times. So I want to share you one of the story from them. Sempi is one of the villages in Chin state, Myanmar. It is in the east of my village and close to the Mitha River. There are about 100 houses in Sempi. The villagers were strong, big and tall. They loved each other as friendly. They stayed together in a good [View Full Entry]

Breaking Waves

Our whistle-stop tour of Australia has thankfully slowed in pace a little and we're currently chilling out in Melbourne. Here's an update since the last blog: After the magical sailing in the Whitsundays we were meant to be getting an overnight bus to Hervey Bay, but the thought of getting on a bus after 2 nights on a boat, with no shower and covered in salt from all the snorkelling was too much, and we postponed our bus trip to the next day and found accommodation in Airlie Beach for one last night. This also meant that we were able to [View Full Entry]

nearly time to go! Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
It's about 10 weeks until D-Day (departure day). Today I'v ebooked the last round of immunisations - rabies, flu shot, Hep A and Hep B. Knowing my luck , I won't get sick from the typical comunicable disesaes, I'll be hit by a speeding donkey or something similarly absurd.... The itinerary as it stands (for today)... Melbourne - Sydney - Auckland - Santiago - Temuco - Junin de Los Andes - San Martin de Los Andes - Bariloche - Ososrno - Puerto Montt - Punta Arenas - Puerto Natales - El Calafate - Puerto Natales - Punta Arenas - Santiago - [View Full Entry]

Hello Pilgrims! I have touched down down under, having passed through Singapore but more on that in another journal entry ...for now - I shall go into the 2nd half of my SA trip. I finished off a week and a half in South Africa experiencing some more cool places. First stop after Coffee Bay, was Cintsa- a gorgeous bay area (see 1st photo). This was a short visit as I headed for 2 nights in the place they call the Hogsback - said to have inspired many a great book story and in particular (well ok, the only one), JR [View Full Entry]
