Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Penguin Parade Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » Philip Island
Yay! Had a lovely few days with the girls- (me, Abbie, Geraldine and Vikky (Abbies co-teacher at school) at Phillip Island just off the coast from Melbourne. A friend of Gel's leant us her holiday cottage for one night which was really nice. I managed to drag Abbie along to the see the penguins (she's been 3 times). So cute- little fairy penguins waddle up the beach to their nests in groups of tens. I wanted to stuff one up my jumper and take it home with me but Abbie advised against it. Not sure my bath is big enough... The [View Full Entry]

Melbourne is currently gripped with the forthcoming AFL final at the famous MCG and there were various activities going on in the city related to the "footy". Luckily we left town before the contestants from Australian Idol were due to perform in Federation Square! One highlight of our short stay was visiting the Old Melbourne Gaol - a real Victorian prison with tiny cells, creepy death masks of those inmates who were executed in the prison (including the infamous Ned Kelly) and the original gallows and trapdoor... Our other highlight was going to...wait for it...RAMSAY STREET and seein [View Full Entry]

The Lanes and the Vines Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
Well, Ive arrived in Melbourne and was greeted by mum's first cousin Geraldine and husband Dave, plus my cousin/pen pal Abbie. It really hit home that I was in Australia all of a sudden having written and spoke to them all these years thinking about them on the other side of the world. The weather in Melbourne was a bit of a shock to the system- the first day it poured down and we attempted a walk round a washed out hippie market called St. Andrews. Then we headed off to the yarra valley vineyards for wine tasting. We visited three, [View Full Entry]

Well, its not long before our long awaited departure on Nov the 4th. Both of us are getting very eager to get on our way. Thought I'd try this as a first entry to test the system. Just had a BBQ for some of the gang which will probably serve as the farewell supper. [View Full Entry]

Nearly there! Only about 5 weeks to go - still a lot of planning going on. My new Lonely Planet book is already starting to look dog-eared. The old one almost fell apart! First stop in SA is Santiago, Chile for three days, then flying out to Temuco to start camping. Update more soon! Emily [View Full Entry]

In 2004 Melbourne repeated the feat that must have startled somewhat anyone who was listening in 2003, that of being ranked the best city in the world to live in. As mentioned in a previous blog the survey was carried out by the Economist Intelligence Unit, whatever that is. This time Melbourne only narrowly retained the lead which it now shares with Vancouver and Vienna (H'mm, I'm wondering if Scrabble score might have been used as one of the criteria). It pipped the other major Australian cities on account of its weather, which I have to say is really rather good. [View Full Entry]

New home Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
At the end of August I finally found a new place to move into and said goodbye to Kensington Rd. I'll miss the girls but am glad to be out of the house and rid of Jason!! My new home is just a minutes walk from Chapel Street = great location. The house looks deceptively small from the front but is actually huge inside. There's also a really large garden, although admittedly it's rather wild. My new housemates are Liza and Micah, both Aussies and my friend Lucky. [View Full Entry]
