Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Wheeee! A holiday! Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
Well, tonight I'm off to Melbourne, (or Mal'bn to locals), for a brief holiday to see Luciano Pavarotti in his farewell tour and to catch up with my delightful cousin - who has just been over to Malaysia doing a consultancy. Can't wait to hear her news and see all of her purchases she's told me about. I haven't had even a brief holiday for ages, possibly over a year, perhaps almost two so I deserve it. [View Full Entry]

Down Under Down Under Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
Yup, we went even further 'Down Under' today at the Melbourne Aquarium. We saw all kinds of fish and sharks and jellies and were told just why a Great White is not kept in aquariums. And of course the baby Sea Turtles were quite cute :D We also went up the Rialto Tower - the highest building on the southern hemisphere - and had a spectacular view of the city. But most importantly we got a car! Yup, we went into a Hertz car rental place and asked for a car. He said they didn't have any. We told him not [View Full Entry]

Melbourne Zoo Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
Hello there everybody. Today we went to Melbourne Zoo just to make sure we'd get to see the Australian animals ;) Well, it was great to see all of it. Kangaroo: check! Koala: check! Heh, no really all the animals were great, and the Sumatran Tiger was very beautiful. We spent about 5 hours at the zoo, and to me the most impressive thing must have been the house with the tropical butterflies; they were so absolutely stunning. Big ones and not so big ones, yellow and black and green ones, orange and black ones (my favourite), blue black and white [View Full Entry]

Melbourne Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne

So, we got to Melbourne :D Yeay! We got in at 4.30 this morning (monday 17th down here) and was picked up by David at the airport. (David and Helen are Hans Henrik's friends, they live here in Melbourne) After having a lovely hot bath at David and Helens house and meeting their kids Ryan, Dylan and Aidan, we went to Melbourne city and spent the rest of the day at the botanical gardensh trying to stay awake. I failed :) Slept some on the grass with parrots and palmtrees all around, it was great. Before I went to sleep, though, [View Full Entry]

Weer zo'n lange dag, was weer kwart over 6 [View Full Entry]
