Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

So then back to Melbourne! We stayed in the other caravan park this time as we were coming from the west. We did some more sightseeing and had a good look around the CBD including a trip on the free circle tram which was quite fun. There isn’t really that much to do in Melbourne with regards to specific sights and most people say its more about wandering around and soaking up atmosphere and the café culture. We had lunch in china town, which was very yummy, but by mid afternoon we got bored and so found the nearest cinema to [View Full Entry]

City day Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne
Day Six: Monday Started the morning by visiting the Art Gallery. I think this needs several short visits rather than one long session as there is so much to take in that you need to rest in between. Amazing collections. We caught the free bus around city to see a bit more of Melbourne. We hopped off at Docklands which is an attempt to develop a previously industrial area into a trendy apartment based new suburb with lots of shops. Apart from a few books we weren't convinced about the shops at all sadly. They are all outlet stores selling leftover [View Full Entry]

Hoof Patrol

My second flight was much more relaxed than the first one with the screaming, vomitting kid. The Plane was much smaller and just half booked up. Finally, at 8pm local time, I arrived in Melbourne, after more than 30 h of traveling. A bit exhausted, a bit tired, but happy. [View Full Entry]

Autumn and Winter in Melbourne We managed to fit a bit more into the final couple of months in Melbourne despite the fact that we were working full-time and triyng to save for the rest of our trip. We paid a visit to Melbourne Zoo which had an excellent collection of bears, lions, tigers and monkeys, all in a huge natural setting with plenty of wandering space for both us and the animals. We also took a boat cruise down the Yarra River on a sunny Autumnal day from Southbank to the quaint seaside town of Williamstown, just the other side [View Full Entry]

James, the consumate host!
A Tour With a Difference - http://www.atwad.com.au/inquiries.html The Great Ocean Road with James. The day started really early with James arriving at the hotel to pick us up at 7.25 - on the dot - in our 10 seater Mercedes minivan. We were impressed immediately. For the first hour he kept us entertained and informed as we made our way out of Melbourne through the new subdivisions and out into the country. first stop was for morning tea. It was blowing a gale and absolutely miserable but James had it all under control. Thermoses full of boiling water into a billy [View Full Entry]

Trip through Dandenongs
Dandenongs! We were herded onto a bus at Federation Square which seems to be the startpoint for all tourist ventures in Melbourne and departed with Kevin on our journey northeast of Melbourne. First stop - devonshire tea (no, they didn't have gluten free scones - they didn't get to that lesson in food technology) and we got to feed the birds. Real tourist warm fuzzy as these damn birds landed on your shoulders, head, hands - anything really, and fed from your hands. Soooo cute. and they were house trained - none of them crapped on our heads! From there we [View Full Entry]

Dinner on the Tramcar Restaurant
Free tram day! Wandered up to the seedy quarter and found the Victoria Market. Now that leaves anything I’ve seen before for dead. It is huge! And full of pretend and make believe... Genuine Italian leather goods at ridiculous prices and some of it was actually good. Alec bought a jacket for $200 which is really nice. However you did have to walk past a whole lot of imported Chinese boomerangs before finding stuff like that. Lots of food... Spent the evening on the Restaurant Tram cruising around the city and eating the most wonderful meal. That was a real highlight. [View Full Entry]

Amazing music machine made from car parts
Melbourne: Day One. 4.30 wake-up call was a great start to the day, but we actually got to the airport when no-one else was there so didn’t have to queue. Flight was uneventful apart from us getting bumped out of my carefully selected great seats, and we arrived at Melbourne about 11.30 their time. The transport system is amazing, it cost us about $16 to get to town and then free shuttles took us to our own hotels - wherever people had booked. From there free trams and buses take you around Melbourne central itself or for an $8 daily fee [View Full Entry]

Melbourne at night

Sawat-dii Khrap! We've been loving Thailand over the last three weeks experiencing a new culture and way of life. To sum up in as little words as possible... elephants, temples, Buddhas, snakes, shakes, rice, noodles, tuk-tuks, songthaews, jungles, waterfalls, ladyboys, monkeys, markets, monks, massages, beautiful beaches, geckos.... Following on from the River Kwai we spent the next day relaxing at Erawan Falls (also in Kanchanaburi) where we bathed in beautiful clear waters where the fish nibbled at our feet if we stopped still for too long (a little disconcerting!). In the afternoon we v [View Full Entry]
