Great Ocean Road Travel Blogs

Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Today we saw Koalas! In the wild!!! We were just moving along 'Great Ocean Road' when suddenly we saw people at the side of the road pointing fingers, cameras and camrecorders into the treetops. When we got out there were 9 Koalas sitting in different trees along maybe 40 meters of the road. They were so cute and hugable adn they were close enough for us to get some pics and catch them on tape too! YEAY! Actually we saw another very special Australian animal before the Koalas: Dad spotted en Echidna sniffing along the road and made HH stop the [View Full Entry]

Road Trip Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Great Ocean Road
Hello, Just back from a two day road trip with the Lanes plus friend 'Hutchy' down the Great Ocean Road tm Apollo Bay. We went down across the ferry from Sorrento (which isn't croc infested thank goodness and then drove down to a place called Torquay for fish and chips. I thought this was quite amusing that I come to the other side of the world to visit a beach called Torquay. Then stopped at the famous Bells Beach surf beach. Not many surfers out and about cos the weather (thankfully) was so nice and still. A few more stops and [View Full Entry]

On the road again Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Great Ocean Road
HAPPY BIRTHDAY NATHAN!! On Wednesday (14th September 2005) we picked up a hire car in order to drive c1200km Great Ocean route to Melbourne. Still in South Australia we visited (briefly) the German town of Hahndorf but left when we couldn't find any decent apple cake. We stopped for lunch at Meningie before driving the Pelican-filled lagoons of the Coorong National Park. We overnighted in Robe in a cabin at a very good YHA-affiliated campsite (with an indoor heated swimming pool!) and visited the towns attractions (Old ruined clifftop Gaol and Obelisk). Hunting for the pumpkin seeds

We took Bertha on an exciting adventure along the Great Ocean Road from Adelaide to Melbourne, some 1200 KM's South East along some cliff hugging coastline. The scenery was amazing, the 12 apostles, London Bridge, Port Campbell, Mount Gambier, Torquay, Angelsea etc.. One thing we didn't count on was the weather, it was dreech! - Freezing at times, one night, in a place called Port Fairy, it was -3 overnight, and we were hudled in our tank of tin, I almost set fire to myself to keep warm but we just turned on the heating instead. The camper was a lap [View Full Entry]

London Bridge has fallen down

Chrissie and I flew to Adelaide and picked up a hire car and started our mini road trip. We drove to Mount Gambier, stopping off In Kingston SE to see the giant lobster and then in Robe to see the lighthouse. We checked into the Jail for the night, which had been a working prison until 1995 and has now been turned into a backpackers - it could use a bit of a lick and polish and it would be really groovy. We were off again early the next day pushing onto Port MacDonnell were the Southern Sea was pounding the [View Full Entry]
