Great Ocean Road Travel Blogs

Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

My first entry into the travel blog is necessarily pre-travel. I need to make sure that you all get the link and have the option of following my tour around the globe - if you are remotely interested! Thanks to everyone who has provided guidance and ideas for my trip to date. Hopefully, I will get to see everything I want, including catching a baseball game and the odd Broadway show in NY and the 'Roman Holiday' sights of Rome, and to achieve everything I want including getting my open water dive certificate in the Red Sea, ascending Mt Kilimanjaro and [View Full Entry]

Upon leaving Melbourne I joined a 3 day tour along the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide. The Great Ocean Road was built by veterans of WW1 to remember those killed during the war, it is one of the worlds biggest war memorials. The road starts in Torquay home to many surfer shops, such as Billabong, Ripcurl etc. Starting our journey here we set off past the lighthouse from kids TV programme 'Round the Twist,' continuing onwards following the rugged coastline overlooking the Southern Ocean. Along the way we stopped to see wild Koala's sleeping (suprise suprise) in the tre [View Full Entry]

I was picked up at 7:40 to go on a long day out along the Great ocean Road. The road was built after the first world war to link a number of seaside towns together, and was inspired by a similar road in California. Our first stopping point was world famous surf spot Bell's Beach, currently home to the Ripcurl Pro surfing tournament. The tournament wasn't running when we arrived, due to there being a lack of surf. This meant we got an unobscured view of the beach. I also came across an information sign in which a huntsman had set [View Full Entry]

Tim and Myself, got up vaguely early, to pick up the car from town. We'd reserved a huge, in fact monsterous, Nissan X-Trail 4WD, which I was rather worryingly going to have to drive mostly, cause Chris is under 25 and Tim hadn't driven for 7 years - joy. Anyway, we managed to navigate through the city, dodgying the trams, and only narrowly missing running a cyclist off the road - Melbourne streets can get rather busy. I'd spoken, to the taxi driver on the drunken journey home last night about our little trip and he'd told me the journey to [View Full Entry]

Never have I spent so much time looking out of a window...the great ocean road was simply stunning! The initial part of it had great weather, sun was in its full glory and the road is at its closest to the ocean. It was wonderful to look ahead at the coastline and know that that is where you will be in a moments time, you can really feel the shape of Australia's coast with all the twists and turns...fortunately I do not get travel sick! After spending a night in Apollo Bay the next day the weather change was rather dramatic! [View Full Entry]

Where's the queue? Where do I sign up to become an Australian citizen? I don't think the government is very savy about giving us visas for extended periods of time, but if they did, I would be the first in line. Love it, love it, love it. I'm currently lying on a glorious beach in Lorne, one of the many small towns along the Great Ocean Road. I've stunned. These types of crashing waves and roaring seas only existed in my imagination and the scene is truly hypnotic. I've never seen anything like it - what a surfer's paradise. So the plans have started. I gave notice to the boss last week. Gave him a date and I'll finish work on the 12th May. Had my interview with the Summer Camp IEP, last week. They are now sending my application off to the states to get placed. Looks like I'll be a specialist councellor. figured I would be anyway. They have given me a time frame of June that the camps start, so now I'm just waiting on a placement and a date I'll leave. So the plan is when I finish up work here on the 12th, I'll Have [View Full Entry]

From Warrnambool to Geelong For our last cycle ride we took the train out to Warrnambool from Melbourne and cycled east. This was decided upon as the prevailing winds are from the west and would speed us along back towards Melbourne. Yes, you guessed. The wind was strong and in our face all the first day. This was the only time we have had difficult winds. A marvel considering the amount of cycling we have done. At the end of this ride we have done nearly 3,000 km from Tahiti to Melbourne. The Great Ocean Road was built by ex-servicemen after [View Full Entry]

Our view at the Games

This is just the second half of an old blog. I've seperated them to make space for the photos While here I really wanted to see the great ocean road but hadn’t really arranged how I was going to do it so you can imagine how pleased I was when it turned out I was going to be able to drive myself all the way along it! Everybody had offered to lend me their car to get around while I was here and after a quick enquiry it turned out my English licence is completely valid here so I can just [View Full Entry]

And sometimes it's along cliffs like this

11 March The Great Ocean Road runs west about 200 miles from Torquay, south of Melbourne along the southern coast to Port Campbell. It was built just after World War I with two purposes in mind. First it was a memorial to the fallen soldiers of the war, and secondly, to try to equal the magnificent Pacific Coast highway 1 in California. And equal it, it does. It is unbelievably gorgeous! All along the ocean road, on both sides of the road, and very close together were signs reading: “Drive on the left in Australia”. We laughed, but it was obvious [View Full Entry]
