Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Hi guys. It's a little after one am here at Hotel bakpak Melbourne and I just woke up from a nap. Today was a crazy amazing day...we went on the great ocean road tour from seven am till after eight pm and were so exhausted when we got back that we fell asleep until about an hour ago. So at seven this morning a shuttle came to pick us up from our hostel which was very convenient and we were on a bus with about six other girls and our tour guide, Peter. We left the city and drove through a [View Full Entry]

I was up bright and early unfortunately the same could not be said about the weather. Dull and overcast and as I got in the car it started to rain. As I drove down towards the Great Ocean Road the skies showed no indication of clearing up but I couldn't turn back and wait for a nice day, I had to continue. I passed through Torquay on my way to Bells Beach. It was on this beach that Patrick Swayze ran into the huge waves to his death in the film Point Break. The beach looks totally different in the movie [View Full Entry]

Well I'm sad to say that I've had to pospone the summer camp! It was a very hard decision to make but unfortunately I know deep down I've done the right thing. I will have to look at doing the camp next year. I still am heading to Canada about Sept/Oct. That was my original plan anyway so thats not changing, and the boys are still so happy for me to come. This now allows me to save more money, a much better situation to be in. I am still leaving work, the official date is 9th June, I haven't changed [View Full Entry]

This is how it starts, a camper and a beach. Next a beard and unwashed hair. Soon, tie-dye, dreds and Jesus sandals. Our little camper has it all and a bag of potato chips! After stocking up the fridge with fruit and veg (we will be eating healthily for the next 8 days) we made directly for Palm Beach - where Home and Away is made. Just 20 km out of Sydney, this is by far the most beautiful beach around and even has Summer Bay Surf Club. A great place to spend our first night free camping; that just means [View Full Entry]

Palm Beach - aka Summer Bay
It really exists!

I managed to distinguish myself when checking out by attempting to get into one of the other dorms which I had mistaken for the storage room, much to the amusement of the other guests at reception who could clearly see the door marked "Storage" a few yards to my right. Calypso gave us a lift to their campervan depot in an eastern suburb of Melbourne, where we finalised the paperwork and had our first look at what would be our home for the next week. It's a Toyota Hiace, with a high top and over 300,000km on the clock. There's just [View Full Entry]

My third time to Great Ocean Road, but only the first time since one of the 'apostles' crumbled and fell and now left with 11. I'd recommended anyone doing this trip from Melbourne, to take at least two days as there is much to see and do on the road leading up to the 12 Apostles. We stopped at a couple of places, had breakfast on the way up to Apollo Bay, then stopped at the craft market there. We took a walk in the rainforest at Mait's Rest, then to the Tree Top Walk at the Otway Ranges. Admission is [View Full Entry]

After travelling through hundreds and hundreds of kilometres of fields (I had no idea there were that many sheep in Australia!), we were definitely ready to see some ocean scenery. Although we saw bits and pieces of the ocean while we stayed in Robe and Port Fairy, the Great Ocean Road didn't actually start until we passed Port Fairy. The road still didn't hug the coast, but there were many turnoffs to the various geological formations. Along the entire road we were rained on (it followed us!), but we were able to find a few breaks to explore. All along the [View Full Entry]

In less than 1 hour, my parents are taking me to the airport for my flight over to Fiji. Yippee! Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes I received in person, via email, phone and text today. I really appreciate your kind thoughts and well wishes. Today has been one of sorrow and excitement. It is certainly exciting to realise that the day of departure on this epic journey has finally arrived. I have been quite anxious all day. It is also sorrowful to have had to say goodbye to many of you for at least 6 months. For others, our [View Full Entry]

Now i know there are alot of people out there who have things much worse than i do, but i still feel i have a right to complain about the week we just had. Firstly i got a call monday morning from ANZ bank asking me whether i had authorized a transaction of $4000 to some unknown person via internet banking. i hadnt - and so became a victim of internet fraud. Now apparently i will get this money back but i have to wait 25 days for an investigation to take place and ive had to go to the police [View Full Entry]

My first entry into the travel blog is necessarily pre-travel. I need to make sure that you all get the link and have the option of following my tour around the globe - if you are remotely interested! Thanks to everyone who has provided guidance and ideas for my trip to date. Hopefully, I will get to see everything I want, including catching a baseball game and the odd Broadway show in NY and the 'Roman Holiday' sights of Rome, and to achieve everything I want including getting my open water dive certificate in the Red Sea, ascending Mt Kilimanjaro and [View Full Entry]
