Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

The Great Ocean Road has certainly lived up to its billing. Basically, picture the most amazing points on California's Pacific Coast Highway on steroids. I finally decided just to get on an organized daytrip tour for $100 and it was totally worth it. The tour hit a bunch of spots along the road including a koula bear site (very strange looking - almost like Yoday with fur) and a music festival in Apollo Bay. I met a bunch of people including a couple English girls I may continue traveling on to Sydney with. I think one of them even pulled the [View Full Entry]

What have I been up to recently? Well living and working in Melbourne, which is fine as Melbourne as I've said before is a place you can really live in, for not a horrible amount of work I can afford my rent and have really got into the cafe/bar scene around the inner city suburbs of Collingwood and Fitzroy, not really into that whole backpackery St Kilda scene but that's me being lazy with it being so far away. I have a pretty good thing going with Computershare, being a 20 minute walk from the house I work on campaigns [View Full Entry]

After little or no sleep, Jess and I set off on out trip with Adventure Tours from Melbourne to Darwin. We were hoping Adventure Tours wasn't going to involve too much physical exersion. We picked up our Wicked Camper on the 27th March in Adelaide. If you’re not familiar with Wickeds, they are the alternative campervan - they’re the cheapest, the most basic (no fridge or power supply here!) and each one is individually decorated with a graffiti style paint job. Oh, and some of the staff take quite a relaxed approach to their work; we arrived at 11am to find the guy at the office totally pissed (although we’re not sure if he was actually working there or if he was just hanging around!). However, despite the strange staff our van is [View Full Entry]

Feeling the need to see this "Great" road that everyone talks about in Melbourne, Rob, Mark and myself hired a camp-a-van for a cheap and convenient method for experiencing the trip. Leaving relatively early one morning after a mad farewell night in Melbourne we set off in search of greatness. We began by heading slightly away from our main objective for a place called Sovereign Hill to expreience a traditional Wild Western style show. However we arrived there too late and had to abandon this plan and turned instead towards Geelong. Bearing in mind that the word "slightly" in this [View Full Entry]

The Great Ocean Road While in Sydney I had set up this tour through the YHA travel agent with Great Adventure Tours This company was really great and I continued to travel with them. I was picked up at my hostel with two German women named Elena and Sara who I befriended on the tour. Immediately I also met three other women named Esther, Hilary and Rosie who were to become an inseparable group with me for the next two weeks. Where were they from? You guessed it- England. Hilary and Rosie are sisters and Esther is moving [View Full Entry]

My favorite place that we stopped at was this rainforrest. We hiked all the way through the rainforest to get to a beautiful waterfall. At the begining of the trail there was a warning sign, telling us to look out for deadly animals that we might encounter on the trail, unfortunately we didn't get to see any of those. The waterfall that we saw was so big and [View Full Entry]
