Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

We rode the Great Ocean Road along the southernmost part of mainland Australia today and yesterday. Reminded me a bit of Highway 3 down the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Beautiful, but wow was it difficult riding. I don’t think it ever got above 10 degrees (50 F) either day. Because of the southerly gale force continuous cross winds and intermittent intense showers we also rarely made it above 60 kph (40mph). Still, we made it to Warrnambool early enough to spend several hours in their well put together Shipwreck Museum and replica coastal town. Some sad stories [View Full Entry]

The Great Ocean Road, one of the world’s great drives was our destination for the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Our plan was to head to Torquay on Friday night after work to the official start of the route, then make our way along the coast on Saturday to Apollo Bay and then on Sunday head through the Otway National Park and on the 12 Apostles and other coastal sights. All the guides we had been reading spoke of the probability of coming face to face with indigenous wildlife, so I was as excited as could be as we left on Friday [View Full Entry]

Well here I am in Southern Australia! Melbourne is actually a really beautiful city. It's got the Yarra river running through it which is lined with attractive parks and expensive restaurants, and a nice boardwalk. At night, these tall columns let off flames on the hour in front of the huge Casino. It's been great so far. On my first day arriving, I took a walk down the river and managed to see a few sights that were listed in the lonely planet guide. The huge MCG, the boardwalk, and Federation Square all are accessible by the walk, and I managed [View Full Entry]

The Great Ocean Road is a well known tourist attraction along the South Coast not far from Melbourne. It is a road that runs for about 4 hours along the south coast looking out over the ocean and it has a lot of scenic places/ natural beauty spots and is mainly national park. We had been planning the trip for the last couple of weeks and had put a notice up in the hostel asking for people to come along so that we could save money on our rental car. We managed to get two girls, although one of them pulled [View Full Entry]

The Great Ocean Road (GOR). It was a name that stuck with me ever since i heard of it, and was somewhere that i really wanted to visit. The thought of a road the hugged the great ocean as it took you on its voyage, sent tingles and great excitement within me. Added to that, I used to have a great picture of Bells beach (a la "point break") on my wall when i lived at the nuses quarters, and now i would get the chance of visiting the hallowed place for surfers. Our first stop is Torquay, and this [View Full Entry]

Melbourne and Great Ocean Road Melbourne is a trendy city, especially St Kilda neighboorhood. We stayed in a nice hostel, Pint on Punt. We spent one day driving the Great Ocean Road with a rental car and one day to visit the city. We also went to an AFL game: Melbourne against Adelaide. Between Melbourne and Adelaide runs the Great Ocean Road, along the dramatic coastline. We did only part of it by rental car. Although the weather wasn't that great (foggy, chilly, rainy), still the views were spectacular. And it was nice to have our own car again like [View Full Entry]

With our potato duties all finished we've had some time to go off and do some touristy things. Our first trip was to set off down to the Great Ocean Road for a few days, and it felt good to get back on the road exploring again. The scenery and just traveling along in the car stopping every few k’s to see and do things was really good fun. From the farm we traveled down the Mornington Peninsula to catch the small passenger ferry from Sorrento to Queenscliff, which is on the opposite side of Port Phillip Bay. The crossing took [View Full Entry]

Finally we meet:
The Twelve Apostles. The others are hiding somewhere...
Take one car, one ocean, one road, two people, two states, several limestone rocks, beaches, kangaroos and koala's and what do you have? The Great Ocean Road. Well they call it that but whilst it is indeed great, and certainly is a road, only part of it is actually besides the ocean! However the fact that this bit is spectacular more than makes up for this oversight. We picked up our little hire car (which I aptly named 'Bluey' because it was blue!) and set off out of Adelaide towards Robe, a small fishing village about four hours away. Getting [View Full Entry]

The Great Ocean Road has certainly lived up to its billing. Basically, picture the most amazing points on California's Pacific Coast Highway on steroids. I finally decided just to get on an organized daytrip tour for $100 and it was totally worth it. The tour hit a bunch of spots along the road including a koula bear site (very strange looking - almost like Yoday with fur) and a music festival in Apollo Bay. I met a bunch of people including a couple English girls I may continue traveling on to Sydney with. I think one of them even pulled the [View Full Entry]
