Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

We left Metung on Monday September 17th. Grandpa was finally able to get everything into the car. Packing for Grandpa, Grandma, Erica and three little ones for a two week trip (including food & toys) was an exciting event. We are able to pull out of the drive at 10 am and thought that was great. We headed out to the Great Ocean Road. Grandpa has taken some great pictures which we will try to identify as they are posted. I will try to give you the fun facts. We have learned several new words this week. When I tired to [View Full Entry]

Well, this past week was crazy and full of new adventures and experiences. Wednesday, I had my first test here in Australia. Again, another great learning experience for me. School has always come extremely easily to me and I have been blessed with that gift. However, as I went to take that test, I realized that it didn't come so easily anymore. The test format was completely different, they had given me this workbook but only some of the answers were supposed to go in there and I just got really frustrated and upset. I made myself focus and try to [View Full Entry]

I am in Melbourne, my last stop of this epic round Australia trip. It's been over eight weeks since I left Vancouver, and only 3 days left. I took the train from Adelaide to Melbourne, another long train ride, this trip about 11 hours. The train is called The Overlander named in honour of those intrepid first travelers back in the 19th Century. I must admit, this wasn't the best train trip when compared with the other trips, the food was less, and the chairs just were not that comfortable. This despite a recent multi-million dollar upgrade to the train line. [View Full Entry]

Well its been ages and as I write I am sad in an internet cafe in Bali writing about what happened in Australia over a month ago - so I thought it was definitely time to catch up! Sorry I have been slack keeping in touch via email with everyone - one of the downfalls of getting addicted to Facebook! but I am going to try and keep up with my blog for these 4 months travelling as I know if I get really behind its just not going to happen! In addition to the photos that I've uploaded onto here [View Full Entry]

The road trip this weekend was a success, and except for a short rain on Saturday afternoon, the weather was gorgeous! I left work early on Friday and made my way towards Lorne. It took a while to get through traffic and get on the other side of the city, and the road closer to the coast was pretty curvy (a lot like driving through the mountains back home), so I didn't make it to the hotel until about 8:00, a little later than I would have liked. But, I got checked in to my room overlooking the pier, got [View Full Entry]

Before I begin to bore you all to death, I have to say a huge congratulations to Niamh and Mark who got engaged on Sunday (can't believe you didn't wait for me to do your nails!). And I must also add that Sarah being her usual brazen self managed to get our little car crime quashed, so we're $1000 richer each! So we got up on Tuesday morning and as we left Sarahs flat the fog was so think around St Kilda, as we got the tram into the city it seemed to be getting worse, high rise buildings were [View Full Entry]

The day started out looking pretty bad...cloud cover and raining. We are headed for the Great Ocean road and hope for some good weather. The first glimpses of the coast in the rain has it's own beauty and intrigue. There is a bush walk into the rainforest so we put on our rainjackets and head out. It was amazing to see the mosses and ferns growing on everything. The Twelve Apostle stone formations are as grand as everyone describes. You just want to sit and gaze. You may notice a pile of stones in one picture...one fell in July, 2005...there [View Full Entry]
