While staying at Nomands We ranged with George and Alex to hire a car and take a road trip down the Great Ocean Road...originally this was a 3 day trip then turned into a week camping! Another lad, tom joined us making the trip bit cheaper! We managed to hire a station wagon at $33 a day, wasnt the greatest car in the world as you can see in the photos but brought some laughs and did the job! We left at 5 on friday and managed to arrive in Adelaide in 3 in the morning with no where to stay!!! between the 5 of us there was few arguments after we drove around city for hour we managed to find some where to park the car!! me and char slept in the car with tom, george was on the bonnet and alex slept on the roof!!!haha not the most comfortable night we've ever had...but least managed to get few hours sleep!!! In the morning we camped up and managed to get a pitch by the beach for next couple of nights!!
Got into the campsite and thourght it would be senable to put the tent up before it got dark...lucky
we did as this is when we realised the tent we hired had one shorter pole than the other!! 5 of us one car and a broken tent...only choice to go get another tent or we were sleeping under the stars for the next week! It was Australia day so we weren't actually sure we were going to get a tent shop open...luckily we did!!! All 5 of use walked around the shop for another hour deciding which one to buy...whether we should get a nice cosy 5 men tent or 3 man tent which was on sale!! We opted for the cheaper one why wouldnt we we're backpackers on a budget!! Lucky when we came to buy it the woman charged us even less for it, so got a bargin in the end!
Back at the campsite it was Australia day so thought we'd make the most of it and went down to Glenelg, which was about 40mins walk from our beach outside our campsite was great!! Here we met a friend of Alex's that he met while he was in Kenya volenteer, great to see them and they showed us around as they lived in Aldelaide! Beach was
lovely...got some great pics! Had some lunch and headed back to cook a BBQ in the evening seen as it was Ozzzie day!! We had to do our birthday calls home... Shell rang daz and we rang natalie! The lads cooked us a BBQ..not gonna lie, it wasnt the best and we resulted in having peanut butter sandwich's for dinner instead! We started on the goon and decided to move on from the campsite as we were being pretty loud so had to climb over a 3meter high fence to get to the beach..not that high i know but when your drunk..it seemed higher. Char and the lads managed it fine but Shell..well Alex had plenty of fun taking pictures of her struggling over it! We got down to the beach and decided to go go for a little swim..why wouldn't we?! Was surprisingly warm and ended up covered in sand due to a few wrestling matches. Yes..immature but fun! ha! We got back and it was a bit chilly so we got into the tent and had an uncomfortable nights sleep.
We woke up bright and early the next morning as we had a family pitched up next to
us who decided it would be funny to wake us up..although later on we found that we had woken them up the night before and they were watching us out the window..laughing whilst Char drunkenly attempted to put her Pj's on. We all ended up getting on really well and the guys played cricket with them all morning. They invited us around theirs in the evening for a proper ozzie BBQ as they saw how bad our BBq was the night before and felt sorry for us!Ha! There were two families and they had 7 kids between them..was pretty mad! Anyway they invited us back to there house in the Barrossa Valley - about an hour away where they had 4 acres of land and were surround by winery's - of course we couldnt say no! We set off the next morning hoping it wasnt just the drink talking when they invited us lol - and by the way they werent dodgy people but we wouldnt have gone back if they didnt have kids!
We arrived at their house which was lush..We had a double bed with en-suite.. the guys had blow up matresses in the lounge and then Shane (the dad) took us out and showed us the winery's (including Jacob's creek), the local towns and the Whispering wall which was pretty awsome! We left early the next morning as everyone had work and kids had school.. we were reluctant to get out of our nice comfy beds as we knew what we were in for..3 nights camping on rock solid floors..ha! They were amazing people, and we were so glad we woke them up with our drunken antics!
Our next destination was the Great Ocean road, but on the way we stopped off at a place called Mount Gambia where there was this pretty amazing lake that was sapphire blue (formed by old volcanoes). We had some pics taken then headed off to Port Campbell where we had booked a camp site right on the beach. We managed to see the Bay of Islands, The grotto and Londons bridge - where we saw the most amazing sunset..would've been pretty romantic if we were with some hunks..but had to make do with George, Alex and Tom lol! Our dinner that night was a packet of crisps and a vodka n coke.. we couldnt find any cafes open and we cudnt b bothered to cook our traditional pasta n sauce so it had to do!
The next day we headed down the Ocean road, stopping off at the legendary 12 (now 11) Apossles, down through the rainforest where we saw wild koala's and ended in Apollo Bay where we stopped for lunch and a look at the beach. We carried on and drove through Lorne and stopped for the night in a place called Torquay in a caravan site. We pitched up our tent and us girls cooked pasta n sauce for us all then had a bottle of wine and chatted to some kool french people.
We woke up the next morning and it was pouring down with rain... obviously we tried to stay in the tent for as long as possible but Alex was in a rush to leave as he had a job interview therefore we needed to get back to Melbourne for lunch. We all got soaked packing away the tents.. well the boys did hehe then went for some brekkie and headed back to Melbourne.
We managed to get back in time with no crashes or major problems with the car. We got our money back for the tent eventually (we tried to get more money for it!) Then went back and started on the goon as we were heading out with everyone to chinatown to go to a club called Billboards.
We spent the weekend chilling at the beach, shopping and hitting the casino (char won $80, Shell won $60 then lost it all and another $7) and an awsome club called fusion!!
