Ballarat, Mildura and Broken Hill
Published: April 17th 2012Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Ballarat » Sovereign HillIt has been ages since my last blog. Sorry everyone, but you know I’ve been busy doing annoying bush walks with my dad. Ballarat was great. We went to Soviegren Hill. I loved it there. We went to an old fashioned lolly store. We bought some red hard boiled lollies. They were delicious. Went got tickets to go on a horse carriage. When it pulled up it was very high. We had to jump on. It was very bumpy. We went to watch on how to make gold. James and I were called down to touch the gold. It was very precious. The bar was worth $150,000. Mum and dad wouldn’t let James go down incase he put his hand in the fire or something else that James might do. At the end I got to ... read more
Our first step into the past....
Published: October 1st 2011Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Ballarat » Sovereign HillAfter Jemana's poor tummy keeping her up all night, we had a slow (and very cold!) start to the day, but oh so very beautiful as where we were staying had a magnificent view of the Grampians. We headed towards Ballarat but made a spectacular detour to see the rock art we'd learned about at the Brambuk centre the day before. The setting was amazing - gorgous bolders with incredible views of the Grampians in the distance. We were all very impressed by the painting too - it looked exactly like we'd expected and it meant so much more as we already knew the story it depicted from the day before. Ballarat was our next destination (after a quick stop for a photo outside the Giant Koala!) and we arrived just after lunch. We had thought ... read more
Day out to Sovereign Hill
Published: June 17th 2009Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Ballarat » Sovereign HillPhotos taken on the 20th of April 2008 The gang went to Ballarat for a tour of Sovereign Hill, the occasion was for Eugene's bday. Entrance was about $35 per person but not it seems to be $39.50 - it also includes entry to the Gold Museum across the road. It's about an hour and a half drive from Melbourne. Sovereign Hill is a huge outdoor museum depicting Ballarat's gold-mining history. There are different exhibits to see to fill a whole day. It's best to plan your day so you won't miss out on anything. Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes or risk having dusty feet. My friend and I were wearing thongs and needless to say, our feet was covered in dust & dirt. We ate at one of the restaurants called United States Hotel ... read more
Lamplough Estate/Sovereign Hill (3-4 December)
Published: December 10th 2008Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Ballarat » Sovereign HillWe drove from Lorne along the Great Ocean Road again, stopping at the ex-Diggers memorial, Aireys Inlet lighthouse (where the ABC television children's show 'Around the Twist' was filmed), and Bells Beach. From Torquay we travelled through Geelong into Ballarat, where we stopped for a late lunch and play at the Adventure Playground. The lake there (Lake Wendouree) was dry and we later learnt that because of this, the police had recovered quite a few discarded weapons and were able to solve several old crimes. Obviously the crims hadn't allowed for the drought when throwing the evidence in the lake! We travelled north to stay with Jeannie and Vin at Lamplough Estate, just south of Avoca. They are parents of a friend of ours and kindly offered for us to stay with them. We had a ... read more
Travelling Back in Time
Published: August 29th 2010Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Ballarat » Sovereign HillMaureen who was also temping at the State Bank invited another girl, Debbie, Mike and myself over to her place in Ballarat for the weekend. This is located about an hour outside Melbourne (a stone's throw by Australian standards) and is famous for an old, historic gold mining settlement called Sovereign Hill. Maureen gave us all the guided tour. Ballarat was the scene of one of Australia's bloodiest conflicts between soldiers and miners demanding a better way of life. This was known as the Eureka Stockade and resulted in the massacre of most of the miners. Sovereign Hills is still kept as it was back in the 19th century and the people who work there still dress as they did back then. There was a school room there where we were given lessons as they would ... read more
