While in Melbourne we called a hostel for a job cleaning in return for free accomodation located in Apollo Bay. So again we got on the bus and headed to Apollo Bay along the great ocean road. The hostel didn't have room for us the first night so we booked into a different one for the night. The hostel with work was brand new and georgeous. All we had to do was work for two hours everyday in return for a dorm room. So we looked for jobs in town as well, that way we could save all our money. Right away we found a job together at a coffee shop. At first we thought it was a good deal but then reliezed would never get a day off and we would have to live in ... read more

The Great Ocean Road The first test for the new van! We decided to travel to Warrnambool via the B140 which is a road that runs parallel to the great ocean road and then work our way back to Torquay via the great ocean road or less glamorous the B100. The weather was great on the road to Warrnambool, it felt good to be actually getting on the road and moving away from the hostel. We stopped overnight at a rest area in the small town of Creesy about half way to Warrnambool. There wasn’t a lot there in the way of life, just a very long road with a couple of shops, needless to say we left fairly sharp in the morning. Later the next day we arrived at Warrnambool, we didn’t see much ... read more

After nearly three months in Melbourne and with our here time shortly coming to an end, we decided it was about time we ventured a saw a bit more of Victoria than we've managed so far. Finally getting round to it, we hired a car and headed out of the city to see the 'Great Ocean Road'. The road itself starts in Torquay, the birthplace of surfing. We didn't actually have a go ourselves, that's yet to happen, but we took a look all the bodies floating around on boards in the sea, most of which don't seem to be doing much! The waves were pretty huge in parts though. After that, we called in a small place called Anglesea and headed for the golf course! No, I hadn't convinced Caroline for a quick round ... read more

Hello whoever 3 weeks isnt that bad a time to make my first entry, i was just waiting for something interesting to happen. So a few would of had texts or e mails so I will just catch up generally, its not like I am not back in a week to annoy you all. Australia is great! thats it, you wont need to know anything else. All ideas you had about this that and other you were right. The big problem I have is telling peolpe how good it is then coming home (to leigh). I should just stay. The whole travel experience is awesome and only hampered by the odd child whining in the cheap seats and money. Make no mistake, its not been one big surf fest. For a start I have three land ... read more

Hired a car with Lee and Dan (who we met in Perth). Drove along the Great Ocean Road. Stopped off at Bells Beach (black and gold sand - not the best), Anglesea (lovely beach there), and eventually Apollo Bay (huge beach), having seen some Koalas en route. We played a bit of beach cricket on Apollo Bay but the tennis ball split too soon. We got an appartment in a motel and ate at a really nice Bistro where I had a loveley fish chowder. In the main bar in Apollo Bay there were some very drunk Aussies including one that insisted that Aussie beer was stronger than beer back in England. He could hardly string 2 words together though so I guess Aussie beer is strong, or he was a lightweight :-) The Ocean road ... read more

It's a sticky morning and the air in Chumpon is stiller than a dead donkey. A relaxing swim will cool things off - then - JELLYFISH ATTACK. OK it's only a small one, but it's the straw that breaks the late donkey's back. We decide to flee Thailand and hit Australia early. Paul convinces Emma it is mere coincidence we arrive a few days before the Ashes tour starts. After organising some hot wheels from Thrifty We arrive in Adelaide and stay by the beach for a couple of nights, then start the long drive down the coast to Melbourne. En route we visit many amazing wineries and astound the local vignerons with our tasting skills: ''Cherry, hint of cigar box and a lingering after taste of Mr Whippy." We buy a couple of bottles to ... read more

5th Dec - Day 19 The dark room led to a late start today, but still got to the airport early thanks to the Skybus. Picked up my next hire car, another Hyundai Getz, and headed down the freeway in the direction of Geelong. Made good time and was soon through the town and on the road to Torquay and the Great Ocean Road. The road wound irs way along the coast passing beach and cove after beach, all sparsley occupied but all with beautiful blue seas. The road started quite normally and was far from impressive but as I progressed it started to get more windey and hugged the cliff edge. It took a lot of concentration so probably missed the best of the views, although tried to stop quite regularly. Arrived in Apollo Bay ... read more

Hi guys, I thought I better get updated again as my Mam and Dad have just visited us for a week and what a week it was. Those two kept us busy... after taking them on a tour of Melbourne we visited Philip Island for the Penguin Parade and the Great Ocean Road which were both absolutely amazing. The Penguin Parade is difficult to explain but put simply its a parade of 'Fairy' Penguins, each one no bigger than 30cm high and every night at sunset about 2000 of them make their way from the ocean to their homes. We got to sit (in the rain and freezing wind) and watch them waddle past. It is an amazing sight but you'll all have to imagine it as your not allowed to take pictures... Never mind. Anyway ... read more

Well hello there, today we left Melbourne and headed on down to the great ocean road - i must say it is spectacular!!! the scenery right from the start is out of this world. The ocean is the Southern ocean which is the one which connects with the South Pole, so no swimmign today -otherwise might freeze to death. We caught a bus which is part of a tour down to Apollo bay, and the driver was really cool and informative. We stopped for lunch and were surrounded by koalas - they were all snoozy in the trees, but we were really lucky and got to see loads moving around - still quite slowly though. AND we also saw the lighthouse where 'Round the Twist' was filmed - remember that weird programme on when we were ... read more
