Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Christmas Present
Christmas Present
This is what Andy is hoping that Santa will bring him next xmas, it must be in Royal Blue wth a Royal Blue canvas back and V8.
Day 107 Waking up this morning and for one brief moment you forget which part of the country you are in and then you remember. It is not really confusing because I think something deep down tells you that you are not at home waking up in the same place every day. Just where did we travel to yesterday and what day is it? Remembering then that we were in Tasmania, a little jewel at the bottom of the Australian mainland. Andy is pleased that we are finally on Tasmania; he has been looking forward to this part of the trip [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone We have had a lovely trip up the east coast of Tasmania, with some lovely days, and unfortunately some showery days too. Mayfield Beach was a lovely white sandy beach and we free parked beside it for a night. We enjoyed a fire in the fireplace provided, and awoke to a brilliant sunrise. We moved on to Coles Bay on the Freycinet Peninsula for 2 nights, a popular tourist spot. The 2nd day there was showery , and the views not as good as all the brochures show! That was a shame, as the clear water and white sand [View Full Entry]

Spirit of Tasmania I awaits.
Day 106 I woke up annoyed that the alarm had not gone off, that Caroline was supposed to set for 5.00am. I had had the most dreadful nights sleep, the mother of all arguments had been going on in the distance and I thought that may be a fight had was in progress or even worse. I shook Caroline and announced it was time to get up, she looked at her watch and said it was half past four, Whoops!! I got out of bed and put the kettle on, and beetled about, Caroline went back to sleep for half an [View Full Entry]

Today is Wednesday for us and we are at sea between Tasmania and Sydney, Australia, our next stop tomorrow and Friday. We are 16 hours ahead of you, so it is still Tuesday back home. We had a wonderful time in Hobart with our old friends who gave us a welcome deserving of royalty, a tour of the city and entertained us in their home. Two Photos: (1) from the top of Mt. Washington overlooking the city and (2) a picture of the old and the new together-a scene I couldn't resist on our walk back to the Queen Victoria after [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone We are now heading our way up the east coast of Tasmania. We had a great time at New Norfolk, exploring all around, then ventured down to Snug where we had 4 nights in a lovely campsite beside a sandy beach. We drove south as far as we could go, past Southport to Cockle Creek. Lovely scenery, and 4WD tracks to get to the end. Another day we took the ferry and minibus and went to Buny Island. We did a cruise ina rib 12.4 inflatable with 3 300hp outboards. They took about 40 people each, and there were [View Full Entry]

The first thing that I really noticed in Devonport, after getting off the ferry in a mad rush of 'what level is the car on', was the quarantine line. Not only did it stretch for a couple of hundred metres, but it started off as two lanes. This was fine with me, until it went into four lanes. Probably about 45 minutes later it merged back into two lanes. Then 15 minutes later we were jockying for position with all the other cars, trying to get through quarrantine, get our eskies sniffer dogged, and get out of there as fast as [View Full Entry]

We caught the first ferry from Bruny Island to the mainland, before making a bee line for the track head of Frenchman's Cap. I knew that there was a long day of walking before us, and I knew it would be tight. Driving towards Derwent Bridge I told myself that we'd be there, walking, at around 12. Well, we got there just after 12, but then we had lunch, organised an EPIRB, and packed our packs. Beth and I had decided that being prepared, and having everything, was the most important consideration. We were both feeling really relaxed about the walk. [View Full Entry]

We made it down to Tassie - Tasmania. Tasmania is the peninsula off the southern coast of Australia, and was one of the original convict colonies. It is suggested that you tour Tassie if you are into tramping (trekking, or overnight hiking staying in fairly primitive cabins along the way) or for a taste of the convict history. We went because not a lot of tourists go there. That appealed to us. We flew to Hobart, one of the two larger cities. Our immediate thoughts recognized a similarity between Hobart and Seattle or Vancouver - minus the high rises. The green [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone We are still loving Tasmania. After 2 nights in Waratah, we drove to Zeehan for 2 nights. Zeehan has a very interesting museum on mining in the area. We did lots of exploring around the area, drove through an old train tunnel with so little clearance the mirrors of the car nearly scraped the sides, to an old silver mine, and did some 4WD tracks. We drove to the coast to Trial Bay and to Granite Harbour, over rough metal roads, both very rugged areas with little shelter for boats. (We are really enjoying our sahara landcruiser for this [View Full Entry]
