Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

DAY 111 There was a rustling in the trailer, Caroline and myself both sit bolt upright, Caroline grabbed the torch and shone it towards the floor, a very large Possum was sitting on top of the food box eating a bag of crisps and when I say large, its probably the size of a big “Tom Cat”, but with an extra long bushy tail. I know we had seen loads of Wildlife last night but I had to be dreaming, this is our house, well trailer tent, and Possums don’t live in here. I got out of my very warm and [View Full Entry]

Day 110 Hello Mother, Hello Father, here I am at Camp Granada… some of you may remember a very old song by Terry Scott called Camp Granada, well after yesterday I have to say that it felt a little bit like that here, especially after we had to abandon our plans to walk “The Nut” at Stanley. If you are not familiar with the song then look it up on the Internet and you will understand where I am coming from on this one. We were beginning to think that we may never see the sunshine on Tasmania and especially when [View Full Entry]

Day 109 Up early again today and sitting in the camp kitchen typing the blog, we had had our little visitors last night, the bread was gone and the bag was ripped open. Caroline and myself had watched these two black blobs tip toe into camp as opportunist thieves, they obviously didn’t have to try to hard to find the little stash of food we have left them, not out of kindness, or entrapment but more out of our own curiosity. I had got a couple of mugs of tea in before Caroline wandered over and had type around 1500 or [View Full Entry]

The engineering is fantastic
Day 108 I got up early again this morning grabbed the PC, my cup, a tea bag, a spoon and the milk and wandered over to what they call the camp kitchen. Don’t get any Idea’s that it is some derelict dirty lean too, it’s a modern large room, equipped with fridge, Microwave, kettle, TV, with a large seating area, but above all it’s nice and warm. The weather is very grey and windy but I am glad to be here. Once the morning tea is “mashed” I plug the lap top in and settle down to managing some picture files, [View Full Entry]

I spent 5 of my 10 days in Tasmania on a Tasafari camping trip. Basically 9 of us toured around in a Toyota 4x4 with a camping trailer. Jen was our guide - and also the owner of Tasafari - she was great - pretty much a hippy that by far preferred sleeping out in her swag and cooking over an open fire to being at home (I believe she sleeps in her swag at home too actually - as I discovered a swag in a mattress rolled up in canvas that you put your sleeping bag into - prefect for [View Full Entry]

After the Tasafari adventure, I was around Hobart for 4 days, hung out with some of the folk from the camping trip and met up with some new ones in Hobart. Life in Hobart pretty much revolves around the pub. Day 1 - breakfast at noon, following by whiskey tasting at the local distillery and bocci on the lawn with a pint, then $5 pichers for happy hour down the street, and onto the Vic tavern for more pints and a live band !! (oh dear ... lots of dancing and a little tree climbing was involved in this evening!) I [View Full Entry]

Day 107 Waking up this morning and for one brief moment you forget which part of the country you are in and then you remember. It is not really confusing because I think something deep down tells you that you are not at home waking up in the same place every day. Just where did we travel to yesterday and what day is it? Remembering then that we were in Tasmania, a little jewel at the bottom of the Australian mainland. Andy is pleased that we are finally on Tasmania; he has been looking forward to this part of the trip [View Full Entry]
