Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

DAY 117 The stormy night did not affect us at all, we heard the rain lashing the tent and the wind blowing the awning for quite a while after we went to bed. We awoke when a gust of wind took the awning that had collected some rain and blew the entire puddle out of it and crashed to the ground below. Awaking now in the serenity of the morning, the sun was shining and we were warm. Getting dressed it was a day for wearing shorts. We had a fairly leisurely morning doing a few chores, as usual a little [View Full Entry]

DAY 116 Oops, I overslept, I remember Andy bringing me a cup of tea, I put it down to one side of the bed and went straight back to sleep again. We both slept well last night, Andy’s back was not too bad so it had not been keeping him awake so we think the tablets must be working. I don’t know if it is the fresh air but I could not wake up properly this morning, I stayed in bed until 9.30 before getting up and showering. That is bad, I do like to get up early and make the [View Full Entry]

DAY 115 We both slept well, but it was time to move again, so again everything had to be packed away. It wasn’t too much of a chore, as we had not put the awning up as originally we were only going to stay one night. I went over to the camp Kitchen only 15 yards away and put the kettle on, “Why use our gas” when there is a perfectly good kitchen fully equipped that I have paid my share to use. We still had ½ a day credit internet time left so I made a cup of tea [View Full Entry]

DAY 114 I was awake since 2.00am, my back was aching so much and I just could not get comfortable, when Caroline awoke she said I had kept her up most of the night so it was time I did something about it. Today was the 1st of March so obviously a good day to go to the doctors, well Caroline has been in the last couple of days so fairs fair I have to keep up. I asked the bloke on the camp site if he knew of the nearest doctors surgery where I could go and he said he [View Full Entry]

So here are my pics from my six-night break in Tasmania - better known down under as ´Tassie´! Based in Hobart, I sailed to Tasman Island, visited the old penitentiary and convict settlement buildings of infamous Port Arthur (chilling and v spooky - especially the asylum!) and was uber-impressed by Hobart´s surprisingly funky modern art galleries and museums. My only regret was not hiring a car and taking myself off to the likes of Wine Glass Bay and Cradle Mountain. Ho hum - I´ll just have to go back one of these days!! Enjoy the pics. :) [View Full Entry]

DAY 113 We both slept quite well last night, the air was definitely warmer and we appeared to have no night visitors either, except that we did hear one Possum playing with the bucket outside the tent but we were both too tired to worry about it. Out of bed first Andy wanders off to the camp kitchen to make the tea, while I shower, I look in the mirror, as I had done the previous day, to inspect the damage, I don’t look too bad all things considered. I still have all my own teeth (including the ones I paid [View Full Entry]

We are on Tasmania having a great time, but unable to upload the blog. Wait till you see the photo's you'll love em. Caroline has had a minor accident, she fell over whilst on a walk on Cradle Mountain, or did I push her I can't remember? But seriuosly, when she fell she hit her face. Her bunny teeth have made a bit of a mess of her lip, so I took her to Hospital, and she will be fine, they did not stitch it as they don't stitch lips due to infection, they are expected to heal properly, she is [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone We leave Tasmania tomorrow after 5 weeks here. We have a day sailing back to Melbourne. On Monday we fly to NZ for 4 weeks catch up with familyand friends. The van and car will be stored at Ashley Gardens Caravan Park, in Melbourne, which isn't too far from the airport. We have loved our time in Tasmania, and could have stayed longer, there are still plenty of walks, waterfalls, and beaches we haven't had time to explore, especially in the north east. We felt very "at home" here. Our caravan has now travelled 6,900k in the 6 months [View Full Entry]

DAY 112 Caroline slept quite well last night, her lip bled once or twice in the night. I was out of bed at 7.00 am as my back was giving me aggro, though we did have quite a good walk yesterday, and I got up to polish the blog for yesterday and made sure after the days events it all sounded ok. We hadn’t had anymore break in’s, though during the night we had had visitors as the cooker looked like a dance floor with all the footprints, but no Possums parcels for us to tread in. I did wake in [View Full Entry]
