Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Cradle Mountain, located near the north end of the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park in central Tasmania is one of my favourite places on Planet Earth. Though not high, about 1545 meters, it has a quiet serenity which allows the consciousness to image itself drifting back more than 5 thousand years and observing the same scene. The shingled hut in the foreground is called the Boat Hut, though when it last had a boat, I have no idea. Coupled witha small sandy beach in front of it, it is used as a resting place for overland and day [View Full Entry]

Today is the last day of the 3 day tour through Tasmania... Very sad to leave everyone, it really was a great group! We went to Cradle Mountain and did a 2 hour walk around Dove Lake, then walked up to Lake Lilla and over to the Wombat Pool... We were told that that is where the Wombat's hang out... yeah, sure... we looked high and low... no wombat's anywhere. We did stop for lunch by the pool (it's a lake) and there was a large black bird who kept attacking this man's sandwich... apparently it's a carniverous bird (we had [View Full Entry]

Ok, so this journal is lying by saying I'm still in Hobart but it was the closest city I could find... :-) We headed off to Montezuma falls where we did a 3 hour hike in the mud to see ... go on guess.. YUP Montezuma Falls! Amazing! They were beautiful and the walk through the rainforest was nice. We stopped in Strahan (pronounced straw-an) and went to a fudge shop. There was also a beached seal (the excitement for the town! - they literally all came out to see... poor seal, I really hope it got back in the [View Full Entry]

Hola! Had my first hostel experience and I am happy to report it was quite a good one! I was so worried about getting in late (after midnight) and waking up people, but as it turns out no one was in my room so I was able to sneak in and not make enemies! YAY! Although, to remind you all of my blonde side... There are 2 switches on wall when you walk in - So one is lit up and says "PUSH" the other is just a round switch... So I try to push the lit up one... nothing so [View Full Entry]

For those of you who have been keeping up with our blog entries, you know that in the last entry from Melbourne we said we were off to Tasmania and didn't know what to expect. Well, this is another one of those places where we were soooooo glad that we did because we both loved it! We rented a car for a week and decided just to drive around and stop at places that looked good to us. We made it a whopping 15 minutes outside of Hobart before we stopped for the night in a town called Sorrell. We got [View Full Entry]
