Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Preface Since 1998 when I first visited Tasmania I have wanted to do the Overland Track, one of the worlds great walks. The weather gods did not send welcoming signals then and I wouldn’t have had the time to do it either. Thus, I had to come back… After eight years I was to find that - except for the weather - things have changed. The Overland has become so popular that the park management had to limit the number of walkers which is certainly a good idea. Furthermore, they introduced a hefty 100 dollars walking pass (summer only) which in [View Full Entry]

A magnificant day greeted what will be Kristie and my last Lonnie cup for some time. The "cup" is the social event on the Launceston calender, attended by around 20,000 locals. We arrived early at our sight (kindly organised by Gordon and Geraldine) to study the form guide. Immediately after knocking the top of one, the abligitory msg went out to poor old Mitch hard at it playing duck duck goose with his prep class in a sunny Melbourne primary school, his response as expected, is unprintable in this blog. Fee felt the best option was to put $1 each way [View Full Entry]

So I went to Cadbury Chocolate factory yesterday. The tour was interesting and smelled damn good. I really felt like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory….though I didn’t see any Oompa Loompas. I was tempted to dance and sing and steal candy but I didn’t. Last night I went out and had Kangaroo steak…a lot like venison. Today I went to a wildlife park and saw Kangaroo’s and Tasmanian Devils.. I had lots of pictures but as I mentioned those pictures seemed to just disappear from the XD media. Bullocks is all I say to that. I’m ready for NZ, I go [View Full Entry]

Lawyers Suck Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Freycinet
Thanks to lawyers I felt my first real pangs of homesickness this last weekend. I don’t tell you this because its bad or really sad. Its just a matter of fact. I’m sure it won’t be the last time. But as Count Rugen (the man with 6 fingers on his right hand) said, “this is for posterity so be honest.” So the story: I went to Freycinet National Park with all intentions of some real alone time. I was going to rent a sea kayak and kayak down to the sound end of the peninsula and camp there by myself. Well [View Full Entry]

Tasmania: Cradle Mountain English Our tour of Tassie (Tasmania) follows heading towards the South-Est. Next stop is the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Highlight of the area is the Overland Track, a beautiful hike between lakes and mountains which takes 5 or 6 days depending on your hiking skills (mine are almost not existing…). Obviously it is not for me! Also my fellow Nick agrees to skip it. The program will be "just" two hikes: an easy one around the Dove Lake and a more challenging one around the Crater Lake (we were also climbing the Cradle Mountain, which w [View Full Entry]

English sorry, not available for the moment! It will be supplied from the next entrie. Enjoy the picture in the meantime! I'm currently in Tasmania (Tassie). I rented a car with an guy from UK (very good idea! he is used to drive on the left!) and we are going around the isle.... Italiano Dopo aver lasciato la Tasman Peninsula ci siamo diretti verso il Freycinet National Park (stiamo risalendo la costa Est della Tasmania dirigendoci verso Nord). Decidiamo di alloggiare a Coles Bay all'ostello YHA. Quest'ultimo offre alloggio anche in una dependance (si scrive cosi?? [View Full Entry]

So I've spent the last 2 days in Hobart. I have to say I really like this town. Its a port city of about 200,000 people... I think. There is fish everywhere... usually fried but its still good. I ate all you could eat sushi last night for $15. Spent the first night I was here in an Irish bar talking to two pilots and contemplating girls and the hair flip, or tucking their hair behind their ears. Ok I was just people watching. Last night I went out for 1 beer.... we all know that is not a good think. [View Full Entry]

Ah tassie, land of uncomprehensible cartoon characters......................well this and so much more. Often compared to scotland by travellers i've met, tassie is quirky. I like that. For example on arriving into Hobart the roof's of all the buildings are different colours, each house has something a little different about it, they are all individual and thats why it works. Kind of gives it a quaint fishing village look to it (except for the larger buildings in the city centre of course but there aren't really huge skyscrapers here). So Day one: Hobart Following the advice of a nice pol [View Full Entry]

We are in Tassie and yes you read right it is the last stop before Antarctica don’t think we have ever been this far away from home before Tasmania is a beautiful state full of mind-blowing scenery. Today we took a tour that drove thru picturesque fishing villages down the Tasman peninsula to Port Arthur. A prison for repeat offenders that closed in the mid 1800's After the penal colony closed 800 or so tourists took a boat walked among the ruins, danced in the mess hall and locked each other in cells for fun and a tourist attraction was [View Full Entry]

Finally got round to booking our flights from Sydney to England today. We will be flying to Heathrow then changing to a connecting flight on to Manchester where S & S will collect us. First though we have to get out of Tasmania! The plan is to drive to Devonport, board the Spirit Of Tasmania for an overnight trip to Sydney and then head to Newcastle for a week before our flight out. [View Full Entry]
