Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Missing Freycinet Photos Missing Tassie Photos So I've finally gotten my missing/deleted photos from Freycinet National Park and Tasmania back. Thanks so much to Damian at Harvey Norman in Hobart for doing all the work to recover them from my XD card. He then put them on a CD and sent them to me in NZ. So very nice. So the pics of the Tassie devil and kangaroos are from a wildlife park outside of Hobart. The rest are mostly from Fr [View Full Entry]

I am writing the Tassie part from the very comfortable Queensland home of our dear friends Ron & Jenny, we have been here nearly three weeks staying with them which has enabled me to get Tassie pics up at long last :-) Tassie was lots of things! The scenery reminded us very much of many places: home (inc. the weather :-( which was a bit of a shock to the sys.!), New Zealand and bits of South Australia, most varied scenery, as you can see from the pics. Food was very good, especially the dairy they produce, we tasted the best [View Full Entry]

Well, I'm being a bit dramatic, but it certainly felt that we were in the middle of a full blown gale at times!! Welcome to life in Tasmania. The country itself is beautiful, a sprawling terrain of rugged mountains, jutting snow peaks, yellow and green patchwork farmland, and soft sandy beaches. Aside from the breathtaking views, the weather is another topic altogether. As soon as I arrived, the rain gods decided that they would treat me to the best they had to offer. It drizzled, it snowed, it poured cats and dogs, it blew in sideways, it sprinkled, it hailed, it [View Full Entry]

Cradle Mountain - for the brief 5 minutes that the snow stopped

Awoke early this morning as Pete needed to go off to work and he dropped me down at the entrance to Cataract Gorge in Launceston, about 2 mins from his house. The Gorge area is beautiful with plenty of parkland and walks around the impressive gorge system that flows throguh into the river that passes through Launceston City/Town. Launceston is the second largest city in Tasmania, but even then it only apparently has around 70,000 people spread out through the valleys and surrounding area of the gorge sy kind of get the idea - better yeat check out the pictures. Off to Tassie Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Launceston
I've decided to fly to Tasmania (Launceston) instead of catching the ferry as had been originally planned. I checked on the ferry website and they wanted to charge me $180 ($40 because I had a roo bar on the car) for an overnight sailing that would take 13 hours. On checking flights this morning I was able to get a flight on Qauntas which took 45 minutes and only cost me $130. Mar and Ana are currently walking the Overland track in western tassie so spent the evening catching up and getting to know Pete, Mar's boyfriend who is a really [View Full Entry]

G'day all Arrived in Melbourne and set up camp at a Crystal Brooks Park, a very shaded and quiet park on the outskirts of the city. Next day was spent in the city centre, riding on a beautifully decorated Pakistani style decorated by Pakistani Bus decorators, to celebratethe Commonwealth Games. With the hypnotic Pakistani music playing we could almost imagine we were in Pakistan, even the conductor kept swaying to the music!!! We did the tourist bit wandering around Melbourne, and spent some time watching the very eventful start to the Australian Grand Prix on a large screen in Federation Squ [View Full Entry]

It's been a while since the last bulletin and as usual we have covered quite a bit of ground, as you can see we are now in Tasmania and have been for the past 2 weeks - one week to go before we head back to the mainland. Before the 11hr crossing to Tassie we crossed the bottom half of South Australia and Victoria, highlights being: Yorke Peninsula, SA... MOONTA, Australia's 'Little Cornwall'! because of the early copper miners who emigrated to the district who were of Cornish descent. Moonta mines produced 170,000 tonnes of copper, closure 1923. This was one of the most amazing trips we have ever been on. Tasmania is a crazy place with crazy people and crazy things to see. Mike, myself and our friend Xander flew into Hobart, the capital city, we only stayed there one day but that was almost enough for such a small city. We did a tour at Cascade Brewery the oldest operating brewery in Australia. We got to see how it was made and have a tasting session afterwards. That night we took a bus ride to Eagle Hawk Neck, population 25, which is situated on the Tasman Peninsula. [View Full Entry]

At the end of the last blog, I had just arrived in Tasmania and had finally figured out my itinerary for the week. I’ll pick up from there, ok? Ok. On Sunday morning at about 7am I ‘moseyed’ on over to the info center to purchase my bus pass; I got a week-long pass that covered all of Tasmania; this worked out to be the cheapest option. By 8am I had hopped on a bus to Launceston, which is in the exact opposite direction from Cradle Mt. (which was to be my ultimate destination that day). It was no mistake, however: [View Full Entry]
