Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

14th July Well...........................we continue to enjoy life here and have been pretty busy lately. We are now at the end of our fourth week of school - 8 left after this! I have taken control of the signing choir which has been an experience and a half!!! There are about 20 children and they are very keen. I had become involved in "The Festival of Voices" - held in Hobart. However, I decided to drop out - as the leader was very much into "ice-breaker" type warm-ups which I am sure have just been invented in order to make us feel stupid. [View Full Entry]

Our Bikes

Thirteen years ago, Lorenza and I booked a trip to Tasmania, a few weeks later we put a deposit on a block of land in the mountains northwest of Sydney. We toured Tasmania on our motorcycles and spent some time visiting our long time friend Mandy. At that time (1993), Mandy and Steve had just started going out together. Soon after our return from that trip we built our house. So, thirteen years later, Lorenza and I decided we had better get and see these people again. It had been too long and we had promised so many times to come [View Full Entry]

Monday 5th June We began our holiday walking up to a place called Wellington Falls, straight from our house! The walk was 17km but not too steep and on good paths. The weather was very cold but sunny and at the end of the walk we were rewarded with great views of Wellington Falls. We saw very few people - nothing like walking back in the UK. On the way back, Ivor realised he had left his expensive walking gloves so I took the backpacks and he legged it back to get them, and to try and beat the darkness (it [View Full Entry]

Our 'New' Table and Chairs

Despite its name and being so far south, Tasmania is not the exotic place many believe it to be. The mainland Aussies actually regard it the way many Americans regard West Virginia. Basically the towns and cities (very small cities) look like the towns and cities in Ireland. The pastures with sheep look like Ireland too. The mountains, trees, lakes, etc are bigger though, more like the landscape of central PA or the Rockies in the US. Unlike the landscape of PA, the Rockie, and Ireland, there are incredible beaches in Tasmania that made me wish it were summer time so [View Full Entry]

Tasmania was amazing, it has beautiful scenery absolutely everywhere. We were there for a week in total. We hired a car in Launceston and drove down the whole of the east coast, right down to the south east peninsular. From there we headed back up to Launceston via Cradle Mountain. We covered 845 miles in total and thankfully managed to get the car back in one piece. Tasmania is much like the Lake District but on a grand scale. Some of the scenery really has been breath taking. Rich has even said that some of the views are nearly as amazing [View Full Entry]

Having been here 5 weeks - we are both amazed that we still feel like we are on a permanent holiday. The house we are living in is a dream and neither of us can stop gazing out of the window at the view. All of our mountain-loving friends would love it and are more than welcome to come and stay. if you want to look it up -- it's called Fern Tree, in Hobart - on the slopes of Mount Wellington. The schools we are working in are amazing! Ivor has a fantastic job at 'Hutchins Boys School. He has [View Full Entry]

Spot the Cute One !

Preface This is to be a true and honest account of the trials and tribulations of Captain V.J. Tran and his first mate Sir S.T. Roberts as they endeavour on their colossal quest to bring good health to the simple people of St Mary’s, Van Diemen’s Land. Captains log: Day 1. The troops were in high spirits as they “kissed” good bye their loved ones and set sail in the HMAS Normochromic for shores long forgotten. For the next 30 minutes the path was fraught with much restocking of tomato paste and spaghetti spirals. For once it wasn’t Viet’s map readi [View Full Entry]
