Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Although the heat in the centre of Australia was entirely manageable because of the low humidity, it was great to be greeted with cool, fresh air when we arrived in Tasmania. We enjoyed a relaxing night in town (with a real bed) and headed out the next morning toward Strahan on the west coast, stopping along the way for a few bushwalks. Our first stop was at Mount Field National Park - it lured us with advertisements of waterfalls and tall trees, and it did not disappoint. The main attraction was Russell Falls - a three-tiered, beautiful cascading waterfall. We decided [View Full Entry]

Rising 1270 metre (around 4000 feet) above Hobart’s harbour and the wide Derwent River, Mt Wellington gives a fantastic view of the city. It's a 21 kilometre drive to the summit, ending in panoramic views of Hobart, Bruny Island, South Arm and the Tasman Peninsula. The interpretation centre at the top protects is good to get away from the abnormally strong winds and a viewing platform on the western side of the car park looks out to the southern World Heritage Area beyond. The Aboriginal name for Mt Wellington is Unghbanyahletta or Poorawetter. In February 1836 Charles Darwin climbe [View Full Entry]

Salamanca Market - Hobart Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Hobart
We went to the Salamanca Market in Hobart which is just really really gorgeous, it has like 300 stalls from selling local crafts, clothes, fresh produce. There are different entertainment acts along the street, bands playing - a man spray painted silver , and just a really festy atmosphere. We then drove up north to a one horse town that looked as if it was literally still back in the 60s. We ended up staying the night in a little town south of Hobart called Snug! Was really cute though - just a little seaside town. [View Full Entry]

Port Arthur Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Tasman Peninsula » Port Arthur
We drove down to Port Arthur, and I for one was expecting a town with a historical settlement on the outskirts….as it happens the town is on the outskirts of the settlement, the town consisting of one bakery and one shop. After paying for our orientation tour and boat cruise, you are given a Port Arthur booklet and a playing card that corresponds to one of the former inmates. Mine, the Seven of Hearts, turned out to belong to George Hunt who was originally transported from London at an unknown age for the crime of stealing a handkerchief. The original punishment [View Full Entry]

We went to visit the Tasmanian Devils in a wildlife park. Tasmanian Devils seem to be dying off due to a cancer that is infecting them. This wildlife centre is dedicated to the eradication of the disease and have been really successful so far. They are now trying to stop any infected devils crossing over onto the Peninsula. The park is really nice and well done, they have some of the good birds like hawks and eagles … they are absolutely massive! They have some parrots and cockatoos as well which were nice to see, normally seeing birds bores tears out [View Full Entry]

We drove down to Tasman Peninsula and the scenery is absolutely amazing. Every five minutes you are hit with a beautiful inlet or lake or view of a mountain. We went for a drive down the coast and stopped at a little carpark where you can walk along the sea front towards the tessellated pavement - because of earth movements the rocks forming the sea front appear tessellated - as if they are tiled - by a giant! The flatness of the pavement is due to erosion by waves and by chemical action of sea water. Tasman's Arch further down the [View Full Entry]

Well, it's finally here. After a couple of years planning and saving, we are on our trip today. We have everything packed and organised, but still stressed out a fair bit. I don't think anyone on either side of our families would be different either. Just a recap for some people, we are off tonight at 1845 from Hobart to Melbourne, then getting the 1150 flight to Hong Kong. Staying in Hong Kong until 20/09, where we fly to Edinburgh via Heathrow. A week will be spent in Edinburgh, then we will travel around Scotland for a further two weeks. Then [View Full Entry]

Like many other places we've ended up this year, Tasmania was never on our original itinerary. However, after spending several weeks in Bolivia and Peru with a couple from there, we decided it'd be silly not to pop over for a few days since we were in Melbourne anyway, only an hour away. Arriving midweek, our friends met us at the airport and dropped us off at Cataract Gorge, giving us the chance to take short walk from there back into town with a few hours to explore Launceston that afternoon, which is the third oldest city in Australia (after Sydney [View Full Entry]

What a great couple of weeks we have had !! Last weekend, Marcus (best man) and Sharon came to stay for the weekend. Saturday, we went out around Hobart. We went to Salamanca Market and bought a sausage from one of the stalls. We walked around a bit, chatted lots in the glorious sunshine and then went to a friend’s house for a curry and some wine. Sunday, we went to help Jen with the house and children - as Andrew had a bit of an accident and was in hospital with a damaged leg. He is ok now but obviously [View Full Entry]
