Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Brrrrr, it's cold!
We left a cold and windy White Beach fairly early on New Year's Day and headed into Hobart to stay with friends who live in Blackmans Bay. Rachel and Damien have two energetic dogs, Isis (a Weimaraner) and Nell (a Boxer), so Annelies and Thomas were in their element. We took the dogs for a walk along Alum Cliffs (yes, another one - there's several Alum Cliffs in Tassie!) near Kingston Beach, but had to make a dash back to the car when it started to rain. On Friday, we drove up to the top of Mt Wellington as it was [View Full Entry]

Sun 4th Jan Arrived in Tasmania a couple of days ago. And have already seen some splendid wild wildlife. An echidna at the side of the road, hoovering up ants, as they do. We have even seen platypus in the river near the campsite - they are very elusive, but I managed to get a few seconds of video footage! As I write this, there is a wallaby about 5ft away! The weather so far has been a bit like a nice English summer’s day - but the wind is cold on the coast, so I am wishing I brought more [View Full Entry]

Part 6 Monday 15th December Felt far from good this morning and had to wait an hour or so until I could drive...why does wine seem like such a good idea at the time but such a bad one in hindsight??! Especially as I was the only driver........Lack of coffee and a hangover bacon and egg roll didn't help either!! BUT had a surprisingly good day and felt fine once we'd stopped at a cafe for the above noted goodies........ We drove to Lake St Clair over the Franklin River to the National Park. We took an easy (Martin was being [View Full Entry]

Part 7 Tuesday 16th December 2008 Woke up very cold and wet. It had rained all night. Where was this Aussie summer weather I'd been promised............. Drove to Mount Field National Park, getting supplies in a tiny village called Ouse on the way - tonight was the last supper before heading back to Hobart! On the way to Mount Field we stopped at "Something Wild" wildlife rescue sanctuary which was very exciting!!! We saw Wombats, Roos, Koalas and the fierce little Tasmanian Devils - at last!! Cedric in particular was very excited about this and we were in that park [View Full Entry]

This is the initial entry for our new travel blog. The travel blog allows us to more easily show you the extent of our travels as well as being able to add an unlimited amount of photos that we take on our way. It is much easier to add text and large photos for you all to see. We promise we will not turn every entry into a "slide night out". We might give you a brief overview since arriving in Tasmania. First we headed for Stanley and took in the North West Tasmanian landscape around to Arthur River. This also [View Full Entry]

We headed from St Helens down towards Freycinet National Park where we were hoping to stay even though we knew it would be difficult to get accommodation. Accommodation in the park near Coles Bay is allocated by a ballot system drawn back in August, so we knew the only possibilities were a caravan park in Coles Bay, which were few and far between, or camping at Friendly Beaches, which was free (it only had long drops) but very limited in the number of sites. But before we got that far, we stopped at the Spiky Bridge near Swansea, and then at [View Full Entry]

We headed away from Friendly Beaches towards Port Arthur, stopping for some berry picking at Sorell Fruit Farm along the way. We decided we needed at least a couple of nights in a caravan park to clean up, so rang ahead to try and book somewhere. The caravan park in Port Arthur was full, but we managed to get into the caravan park at White Beach, about 10km from Port Arthur. The park was packed and teaming with kids and quite nice except it was the first time on this trip that we also had to pay extra for showers and [View Full Entry]

Part 5 Sunday 14th December 2008 From launceston it was a long boring motorway drive (1st Motorway we'd seen so was quite surprised to find one) and I looked forward to the twisty winding roads - which I got later - lots of them!! We stopped off at a honey farm and did some tasting. Yuuuum! I do normally like honey but this stuff was especially great - chocolate, pistachio, white choc and raspberry........ Made some honey purchases (which were later to be stolen by some mean Kiwi Custom officials). Drove to the top end of the Cradle Mountain - Lake [View Full Entry]
