Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

DAY 1 - Tasmania
DAY 1 - Tasmania

Tasmania - Day 1 - Hobart Christie, Jody, Niamh and I arrived at Hobart at around 10am after just a short flight from Sydney having prearranged an economy hire car for the 10 day adventure. I could see that the YARIS we were given would be a bit of a challenge to squeeze in our 4 bags and backpacks, we over packed as usual. On the way over on the flight we set out our ground rules for the adventure. 1. Never stay at the same accommodation twice, and look for 'unusual' or off the beaten track places. Budget not to [View Full Entry]

Camped at Friendly Beaches - and shared our dinner location with the local wallaby population. Weather gorgeous and hot 8 Jan Heading down towards Port Arthur where the convicts were held. Campsite full tonight so stayed at Lime Bay - fabulous pitch overlooking the sea. All for $12 - first time we have paid in 4 nights! Happy New Year everyone. We have had an action packed start to 2009 with our visit to Tasmania, but we did needed it after hanging around in Sydney since Christmas, waiting for New Year's eve to arrive and the spectacular fireworks over the harbour. I'll let Gem explain all. Gem: Happy New Year! Here I am, up bright and early on New Year's Day. I have never seen Sydney so dead - everyone must still be in bed nursing their hangovers! The fireworks were FANTASTIC! We had to queue for 4 hours in the blazing sunshine just to get into the [View Full Entry]

So, following the end Sydney's festivities and whilst most were still nursing hangovers...I slipped away on January 2nd....'but where to?'....I hear you groan.... Melbourne Only the sporting capital of Australia, no less! And as I checked into yet another hostel that I felt too old for, I found that Melbourne Victory were playing against someone (it didn't matter who) at home. So after dumping my rucksack it was off to find what locals call.....the 'Telstra dome'. And what a great stadium it was too, a 50,000 seater stadium, equipped with fantastic views, a retractable r [View Full Entry]

Was fuer eine Sauerei! Auf [View Full Entry]

We drove north from Cockle Creek, through Hobart and out to Mt Field National Park. We set up camp and then walked the circuit walk to Lady Barron Falls, Horseshoe Falls and finally Russell Falls. Thomas was in heaven with all the waterfalls and rated the latter two 10/10 while Lady Barron Falls scored 9/10. We discovered that Mt Field, along with Freycinet National Park, is Tasmania's oldest national park. It was founded in 1916 and according to Wikapedia, the last known wild thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) was captured in the region in 1933. We only spent the one night (Thursday) at [View Full Entry]

Me and andy have explored Tasmania campervan style....we kinda left it to late to get an actual campervan so we converted a rental van into our little home for a week....blow up bed, sleeping bag and we were ready to go! Hobart is a pretty little city built into the hill. Lots of nice colourful houses and a big bustling waterfront. didnt spend long here but was good to see where all the people in tasmania actually live! we set off down south to the Tasman Peninsula....endless sweeping beautiful stretches of deserted beaches. despite it being high season, there were never [View Full Entry]

From Blackmans Bay, we headed south for Cockle Creek, located in the far south of Tasmania on the edge of the Southwest National Park. Cockle Creek is as far south as you can drive in Australia. We set up camp in the National Park camp ground (Boltons Green, AKA Fords Green) and decided to do the two hour easy going Fishers Point Walk, which took us along beautiful white squeaky-sand beaches and rocky outcrops. Along the walk we saw the life-size sculpture of a 3 month old Southern Right Whale, old whaling sites (Imlay/Smiths Fishery), Whalers grave & headstone, and the [View Full Entry]

I got a taxi to the airport and before long i was boarding my flight, and before long i was dis-embarking my flight. It was only 1 hour from Melbourne to Hobart and the majority of that time was spent either ascending or descending. I was met at the airport by Jen and was given a lift to Midway Point (about 20km east of Hobart). I will be staying with Jen and Jonathan and must start to look for work in an attempt to replenish my fast dwindling funds. Their house is really cool, as i have my own room and [View Full Entry]

Well, it seems like AGES since my last Blog. Hope you all had a wonderful and happy Christmas and I wish you all good health and a safe 2009. After leaving Ballarat we headed south to Lake Colac. As with most of the lakes throughout Victoria it was water-less!!! The drought is something that's just incomprehensible to us, coming from the wettest part of Australia, where rain is a darned nuisance !!! It was also smelly and blowing about 60 knotts so we left next morning. Kept going south and ended up on The Great Ocean Road at Lorne. We pushed [View Full Entry]
