Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Tas - Bay of Fires Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Saint Helens
Up at 7.30 and left by 8am today. We drove from Swansea to St Helens to the Bay of Fires. We stopped at the Information Center, a lovely little lady welcomed us and showed us where all the free campsites were and told us that there were free showers in the main car park area near the harbour - brilliant! And they were hot showers - even better! We drove up to Grant Lagoon Camping area, there was nothing there apart from the lagoon and lot’s of mosquitoes! This was really camping in the bush! We set the tent as quickly [View Full Entry]

Well it didn't rain last night - woohoo! We got up had breakfast, got chris to eat watermelon! Then headed up the East coast towards Swansea. We camped in a free campsite in Mayfield Bay, right on the beach. Only had a wc but that's all you need for one night! We then drove to Freycinet National Park. All the National Parks charge a fee to enter, $22 for 24 hours or $53 for up to 8 weeks. We went to Honeymoon Bay which was quite small, had a bite of lunch and then drove to Wineglass Bay car park.

Last night it rained, and rained, and rained and rained and rained! The wind was also really strong - I just love camping! I woke up at 1.30am to the sound of the wind and also because i was so cold! Chris and i both woke up loads throughout the night! I was wearing 2 layers, even 2 pairs of socks but i was still cold! Apparently it's like this in the winter but it's MID-SUMMER!!!! I can't believe our luck - again! But we found out this morning that we were the envy of the other campers as our tent [View Full Entry]

11 Jan Great day in Hobart today. Lovely city with gorgeous old sandstone buildings. Manged to find an internet cafe on a Sunday which was good, but couldn’t go to the bank, which was not so good. Views from Mount Wellington were stunning. Weather is getting hot now. 12 Jan Disaster! Clouds of smoke and horrible graunching noise coupled with strong smell of burning! Just managed to reach a ‘car body shop ’ where the proprietor, a lovely young tattooed guy and his mechanic mate agreed to sort us out. Had to spend the night in the ‘Norfolk Hotel’ $65 includ [View Full Entry]

Luckily we had already booked a camp site at the Discovery Holiday Parks camp ground, which is the only camp ground at the Cradle Valley end of the park. The rest are more up-market cabins and châteaus, etc. The park was full but the camp sites were nice and secluded so we weren't jammed in like a normal caravan park, although we only just squeezed the camper trailer into our allotted site with the awning up. Alex's unwanted association with leeches continued, but the two we did spot on the door mat did not survive to live another day! Middle of [View Full Entry]

Up at 6am today as catching our flights to Tasmania. It's only an hour and fifteen to get there. We dropped our hire car off at the airport. The Qantas breakfast was awfull, worst meal we have had with them so far! We arrived in Hobbart at 9.50am, picked up our new hire car and drove to a campsite. We went to the Treasure Island Campsite in Glenorchy, just 15mins from the City Centre. It is right on the Huon river and near the Cadbury chocolate factory!! We have noticed that Alot of places are cornish names which is fun comparing [View Full Entry]

We set up camp in the National Park camp ground and Annelies and Thomas headed down to the lake for a dip. It was very cold but Thomas managed to get completely wet. In the evening, we went for a free Discovery Ranger walk to Platypus Bay, which was very informative. We were lucky enough to spot several platypuses swimming not too far from the shore's edge. We learnt that baby Platypus and Echidna are both called Puggles and that male Platypuses have venomous spurs on their hind limbs. The next day (Saturday) we set off on the 12.5km Shadow Lake [View Full Entry]
