Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Well what a few months it has been. Since my last blog we have been back to the UK where we had a really amazing time catching-up with family and friends. It has been a very special time to see George with his cousins, grandparents, aunts and uncles. I did think that, though we might not see them very often, when we do it is a quality length of time. Whilst there, I went to New York with my mum whilst George and Ivor stayed with his parents. We all also went to the Lake District and we had George Christened. [View Full Entry]

Blogger Owen: Tassie... The boatride over. Something about catching the Spirit of Tasmania seems to get me on edge - not the actual boat ride; rather the paranoia of arriving late and not getting on board at all. The day of our sailing was madly spent packing, cleaning and organising. We'd be arriving back to Melbourne the same day we were to leave for China, so the house had to be in good order. Naturally, by the time we left the car was packed, the fridge emptied and dishes done... but the house still looked like it'd been nuked. Convinced that [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone We came over to Tasmania on Saturday and are really enjoying it here. After 2 nights at Ulverstone, on the north coast near Devonport, where our ferry came in, we then travelled to Stanley, in the NW corner of Tasmania. Stanley is an interesting fishing village , with lots of history. We spent 3 nights there, and did day trips with the car to Arthur River and the "Edge of the World", on the west coast, which had amazing scenery - red rocks and rough west coast breakers coming in to the river mouth and bar. We also went [View Full Entry]

Tasmania is a truly amazing place. Lush rainforest, jagged mountains, picture-perfect beaches, and rolling countryside all crammed into one little island; and overrun by unique and almost comical creatures - echidnas, wallabies, and tasmanian devils just to name a few. Our last week at the apple orchard was more play than work. One evening, Robert (the owner of the orchard) took us on a “cherry-pinching mission” at a neighbouring farm. We each picked a 10kg bucket of cherries to bring back to the accommodation for everyone to share. After some cherries and beer, we went for a d [View Full Entry]

Living in Tasmania Oceania » Australia » Tasmania
Well, i've been living with the J's for almost a month now so time for an update. Not good news on the job front, i secured employment with Dominoes Pizza in nearby Sorell to be a delivery driver for them. This was almost 2 weeks ago. I'm still waiting for my first day of action in my 'company car'. I last spoke to them 5 days ago and was told 'we're still waiting for your pants to be delivered?' This was not a question, they just speak like that. Due to not having my own vehicle i will not be guaranteed [View Full Entry]

We both woke up early today for some strange reason - and Chris was very thirsty, needn’t explain why! As we were awake we got up, had breakfast and went into Hobart. As it was our last day here we had a bit of a walk around the City. We walked through Elizabeth Mall, through the gardens where you can watch people play outdoor big chess! Then along the Castray Esplanade up through Princes Park and up to Battery Point. We walked down Kelly’s steps back onto Salamanca Place. Geoff and Didi had told us about a really nice bakery so [View Full Entry]

AUSTRALIA DAY !! We met Charlie in Salamanca Square in Hobart today and then Si and Fi came a little later, around 3pm. We spent the afternoon enjoying the sun with a couple of beers. We moved to a pub on Salamanca Place as they were playing the top 100 songs on Triple J, a radio channel that all the Australians listen to on this day! They were also serving up free sausages! We had a really good day and evening, met loads of people and had lot’s to drink - keeping to tradition!!! Even got a few freebies! [View Full Entry]

Tas - Huon Trail Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Hobart
Today is Sunday and for once we don’t have to get up and pack the tent up! Got up at 10.30, did the laundry and by the time we had had breakfast it had dried - a nice sunny day! We had bought some fresh cherries for breakfast from the market - delicious! We went for a drive for the afternoon. Headed south of Hobart on the Huon Trail. Drove through Kingston, Margate, Snug and Kettering. This is where you can catch the ferry over to Bruny Islands. We took a right turn on the road to Gardeners as we were [View Full Entry]
