It was a beautiful drive from Launceston to Hobart in the Land Rover, it really does remind me a lot of Scotland. I love being able to pull up on the side of the road and get a proper meat pie... gosh the things you miss! Seeing the boats coming in at the end of the Sydney to Hobart race was thrilling, their joy and exhaustion written all over their faces on arrival followed by celebrations, it's definitely not a race for the faint hearted. We spent a few days in Hobart and joined in some of their celebrations which was fun, the harbour front in particular I did enjoy and the markets were good fun, all the food and drinks available were mouth watering after living in Asia for so long. We travelled back up ... read more

Well here we are in the lovely city of Hobart with its many old historical buildings and a great waterfront with Constitution Dock where all the yachts complete the grueling Sydney to Hobart race each year and situated on the Derwent River. The Salamanca Markets were a must so we caught the bus into the City as it is always such trouble finding a place to park our big truck. After Penguin we travelled to Deloraine, a lovely little town on the Meander River with the caravan park just beside the river so we had a great spot for the week we were there. We met up with the couple who bought our first caravan as they are travelling around Tasmania also. We went out to a 60’s diner with them one evening and had hamburgers with fries of course, a great night out with juke box music and all. We visited a honey farm at Chudleigh just outside Deloraine and they had so many varieties with tastings as well it was hard to choose. From Deloraine we drove onto Longford and stayed at which we say is the best caravan park in Tasmania right beside the Macquarie River, a wonderful spot. A great bakery also ... read more

A little further along the Lyell Highway we come to Lake St Clair National Park, which lies immediately south of Cradle Mountain and is where the Overland Track ends (or begins, depending on which way you walk it). It's pretty late in the day by the time we arrive, so we opt for a short walk along the shore of Lake St Clair. Compared to that of its twin park around Cradle Mountain, the scenery here is less striking, but this walk is going to give us our best opportunity yet to see the animal at the top of Alex's Most Wanted list - Ornithorhynchus anatinus, a.k.a. the duck-billed platypus. The gently sloping sandy lake shore, which gives way to woodland as you walk away from the water, are - according to the park guide - ... read more
