Beauty Point, Tasmania 12 – 21 November 2018 Our flight from Melbourne to Hobart was early, 7.20am, so we had to book a taxi for 4.45 and we were at the airport by 5.15. We checked our bags in and the young lady taking them from us looked at our boarding cards and said that as Jim is tall would we like a free upgrade to an exit row and to share three seats between us to give us plenty of space. For a moment I thought I must still be asleep and dreaming. But no, it was real, and we had a very comfortable and short flight of just over an hour. A short taxi ride to TasCamper depot and we collected our Toyota Pop-up vehicle and by 10.00am we were on the road to ... read more

I had never heard of Beauty Bay until a few days ago, though the neighbouring town of Beaconsfield will be etched in our minds after the epic survival of two miners trapped by a rock fall, 937 meters underground. We have stayed in the Beauty Point caravan park for three nights. A chance for a rest, bring the blog up to date after the day at Evandale Penny Farthing Races, and the use of the park laundry. Beauty is a very appropriate name for this point on the Tamar River. We see sunrise on one side of the point and sunset on the other, all about 50 meters from our site. There are beautiful flowering gums all around the area, and plenty of cheerful birdsong throughout the day. The river here is of course tidal, so ... read more

Our last day in Tassie, Tuesday 17th January proved to be an interesting final day. The ferry wasn’t due to leave until 7:30pm and loading would start at about 5:00pm. That meant we had virtually a whole day to amuse ourselves but we already knew what it was we wanted to do. Having failed to see any platypuses in the wild on our entire journey around Australia we planned to visit Platypus House - a platypus and echidna centre situated in a place called Beauty Point, about 40 kilometers from Launceston and still within easy reach of Devonport – the ferry terminal. We partook of our complimentary breakfast and completed our packing in leisurely fashion but we were ready to leave Launceston at about 10:00am. The route to Beauty Point took us along a road that ... read more

I was up early again and headed to Cataract gorge which is right in the city of Launceston. There is a suspension bridge, a chairlift to the other side and some walking tracks. I didn't have much time so I just walked across the suspension bridge and back. It's a beautiful spot but after the accident gorges just aren't my favorite place to be. After snapping a few pictures I headed up north from Launceston to Beauty Point where the Platypus house is located. It's a conservation facility for Platypus and a couple of echidnas. Platypus are such an interesting animal. Although their duck bills look hard they are actually more soft like leather and have thousands of little sensories. They are blind under water as they have to keep their eyes closed. It's rare to ... read more
