Today is probably the hottest yet so far, the bush avian call was more melodic than the rowdy raucous Fra car' of yesterday morn. But wait there is another sound not too far from my tent, it sounded like footsteps, oh! shit!!. I have heard about naughty people murdering tourists in the remote places of S.A. Poo scared I took a sneaky peaky through the tent fly, I was so relieved to see "Will Wallaby" foraging around our campsite. Note to self, extra care is needed in choosing bush campsites. The first rule is to look for rubbish, especially beer cans or condoms, sure sign that the site is frequented by locals. Second is fresh car tyre tracks, what goes in, must come out, "Don't pitch tent on bush tyre tracks for obvious reasons. With the ... read more

Seems Greg is the master of planning when it comes to arriving conveniently in time for lunch. Today was no exception. Bremerton Wines is an old favourite of ours in Langhorne Creek so it was no surprise we arrived here just in time for a tasting followed by home- made pizzas. Yum! Armed with our purchases we headed towards Meningie for 2 nights at the Lake Albert Caravan Park. With a lake side site set among gums it was easy to sit and gaze at the glassy surface of the lake, watching the pelicans sitting in a line on a pipe leading its way out to the shallows. Well actually the lake could never really be described as deep. There was a greater risk of being blown out into the middle of the lake when kayaking ... read more

After a good night's kip, the noise of our neighbours brushing their teeth @ 7.30am suggested that the walls between motel rooms were not particularly sound proof. Seeing no peace for a lie-in, we went with the flow and fell out of bed early. We strolled down (well actually I hobbled - as the bites on my feet are still quite tender) down to the bakery and, after some deliberation, purchased a couple of Ned Kelly’s for breakfast. These are the Oz equivalent of Cornish Pasties - egg, bacon, meat and tomato baked in pastry. An interesting experience, but probably not one we'll choose to repeat. Mid-morning coffee was taken at Kingston SE in a beauty salon* that had successfully diversified into supplying the local’s coffee. From then a fairly boring drive through the salt flats ... read more

When we woke up on Thursday, 3rd February we dreaded what sort of news we might hear. During the night Cyclone Yasi had slammed into the north Queensland coast at Mission Beach and Tully all but destroying these small towns. All along the coast from Townsville up to Cairns it had caused widespread devastation. It is an area prone to getting cyclones but how do you prepare for a category 5 cyclone? We hope that the brave people of Queensland don’t have to deal with any more natural disasters for a long time. Today we said goodbye to Robe and made our way towards a place called Meningie. People had told us that there was not a lot to Meningie but it was ideally placed along our route towards Adelaide, the journey was well under 200kms ... read more

Time is drawing nigh for the finish of our odyssey. We have booked our flights back on 30 Sept. and have another week to get back to Melbourne. This will give us a week catching up with family and doing a few other things that need to be done concerning the vehicles. We have had a pretty relaxed week in that we haven't done great distances and have had time to smell the roses-well wine bouquets actually. After leaving the Eyre Peninsula we crossed the Flinders range and made our way into the Clare valley where we had a couple of nights and visited several vineyards. Then on to Barossa where we did more gourmet visits including to Maggie Beer's Farm Shop for lunch and samples. Then on to Adelaide and a 3 night stay in a park in Mt Lofty Nat. ... read more

Was wondering why we hadn't heard any feedback from my Swan Hill epistle and have found that I had saved it but not publised it to the web! Silly old Aunty Jo. As I have said before we are still learning to do this. I had wanted to add some more photos but it is so slow to download I lose patience. There must be an easier way and I will find it. Anyway we have had the most marvellous few days. After leaving Pinaroo we drove to Bordertown in SA losing all our fruit and vegies at the border. Happened on the way to Deniliquin also so now we will be watching borders carefully. Bordertown on the Dukes Hwy is very pretty and had a good chat to the lady at the tourist info. She ... read more
