So, I said I would not make any promises and here I am a little over three weeks later, feels like much longer. I spent the following few days doing the cultural touristy stuff since I was on my own, I hit the State Library, The Botanical Gardens, Museum of South Australia and Aboriginal Art Museum, some definitely more interesting than others but each definitely worth a look, some fascinating art. The Botanical Gardens were beautiful and I found myself there almost every afternoon until the rest of the crew arrived. I had the chance to spend some time with people from all over the world, with roommates from Hong Kong, Germany, Sweden and France. I spent most of my time with two guys from England one who was a worker at the hostel and one ... read more
This week held lots of excitement: I received my first piece of “real” mail and phone call from the states followed by several outgoing calls on my end. I also celebrated Australia Day on the 26th. A fellow American (co-worker of Amber’s) invited us all over for a barbie near the beach. We spent most of our time inside watching cricket and tennis before grilling snags due to the excruciating heat. When I say excruciating, I mean it! Temperatures reached over 100 degrees with slight humidity. I felt like I was melting! We actually finished our Australia Day celebration on Saturday over at Ossian’s flat where we watched a 20 minute firework presentation from his balcony. Earlier that day, Amber and I had the chance to visit the Tandanya (a name given to Adelaide by the ... read more

I have nothing adventurous to share at the moment but instead I wanted to take this opportunity to say "Thanks" to each of you. I really do appreciate the support and encouragement all of you provided... before my journey and even in the midst of it now. I am truly overwhelmed with the amount of e-mails, prayers and thoughts that you have shared with me over the last month. Thanks to each of you!... read more
Many of you may be wondering what I am actually doing in Australia besides soaking in all of the beauty. I seem to forget who I have and have not informed of my most recent life changes. Here’s what happened: Over the summer and through a lot of work, the Lord really changed my attitude towards international ministry. There are a number of ways in which He exposed His desire. However, the most powerful evidence was my change of heart towards the idea of pursuing my second year field placement out of the country. As my heart changed, God opened several opportunities for international travel. In July I found myself attending international placement meetings and in August I actually completed my application for work in Australia. Later that month I received an e-mail (along with six ... read more
Upon arrival into Australia, I received the following message: “Just a warning about sharks, we seem to have a lot of them at the moment and they are pretty hungry.” With that bit of information, we took the tram to Glenelg Beach for some sun bathing and light walks along the shoreline. In fact, I recall only dipping my feet into the water once. I also had the chance to catch the first stage of Jacob’s Creek Tour Down Under. It is a week of some of the world’s best bike riders hitting the roads of South Australia to compete in a backdrop of vineyards, hills, valleys, towns and coastlines. Stage one commenced just outside our new home. Yes, Kameron, Amber and I finally moved into a two bedroom apartment just inside the city. Thank goodness! ... read more
National Day of Mourning
Published: January 17th 2005Oceania » Australia » South Australia » AdelaideJanuary 16th was the National Day of Mourning for the victims of the Tsunami disaster. I spent the morning at Unley Park Baptist Church watching a brief powerpoint presentation that provided an opportunity for prayer and reflection over the events of December 26th. The Pastor entitled this sermon “When Disaster Strikes”. He reinforced humanity’s extended search for the meaning of life and God’s presence in our pain. Our longing for such truth reminds us that God sees the big picture even as He sees every individual person and every heartwrenching emotion. Often, we only see what is clearly evident, but He sees our pain individually, one by one. Not one is overlooked. Psalm 22 reinforces that pain is pain and that God gives us permission to be angry, disappointed and doubtful. It does not surprise Him ... read more
Today I am back in Adelaide and have been here since Wednesday. The rest of the group arrived in Adelaide Tuesday while Amber and I were away in Tasmania. Since my arrival back into the mainland we have been searching for living accomodations and this has proven to be an ongoing stress in our lives at the moment. Yes, we are residence of the Backpack Oz (a hostel) at least until tomorrow night. We have a couple of leads on apartments for *hire but have not had any such luck finding something both available and suitable for a short term lease. Kameron inquired with a rental agent, which is currently searching for us at a small fee. Although I feel confined to only the contents of my backpack from Tasmania I am finding some rest from ... read more
