Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

"Steggy" is short for stress-o-saurus which is appropriate since Aussies shorten words and names. Steggy was given to me at the footy match as a gift from Kameron. She thought I needed a little something to cope with the stress of leaving the group in a couple of days. So, not only will I use Steggy when things get tough but he will also travel with me throughout my remaining time in Australia. We (that is, Kameron and I) decided that I needed to take photos of Steggy over the course of my last month's travel. With that said, here is [View Full Entry]

What a fabulous weekend. It was so nice to get out of the city and view the Barossa and a footy match. Footy is short for Australian Rules Football or AFL. It’s not rugby or gridiron (USA NFL football). The best way I can describe it is as a mixture between rugby and soccer. It’s very fast paced and the blokes are incredible athletes. Fortunately, we had tickets to the “big showdown”-Adelaide versus Port Adelaide. We decided to “go for” Adelaide which was lucky for us since they won the match. The stadium was packed full of very loyal Adelaide and [View Full Entry]

One of Katie’s co-workers, Danielle, escorted us to her home in the Barossa Valley. This included a stop at her family vineyard just inside the town of Lydoch. Our first stop included grape picking and taste testing right off of the vine along with wine tasting straight out of the barrel. Other wine tasting spots and travel included Grant Burge, Saltram Winery Jacobs Creek, Tanunda and Angaston. [View Full Entry]

Ben Folds puts on such an incredible live show, well worth the wait; fortunately, I did get to see most of it before feeling the effects of the mickey that was slipped into my drink. My first footy game, Adelaide Crowes vs. Pt. Adelaide Power, it is now no mystery why Aussies are obsessed with this game. [View Full Entry]

A fantastic threesome camping trip with Andrew and his mate Stuart into the depths of the Yorke Peninsula over the Easter weekend! Innes National Park has the most gorgeous, ridiculously spectacular coastline - such an amazing sight to see. It was one of those times where everywhere you go you see parts of the world that make you want to worship... [View Full Entry]

So...I arrived at the Thebarton Theatre not sure what to expect and found a treasure of a venue only a ten minute bus ride from my flat. The theatre was built in 1926 and regardless of many years of renovation, I could picture early Aussie theatre goers and high society piling into the place for a big night on the town. The place actually really reminded me of The El Rey in L.A. Opening for Gomez was Paul Dempsey, the lead singer of Something For Kate, a Melbourne band I have yet to give a listen to. I only caught a [View Full Entry]

Heading down to the famous Aldinga beach (famous for the not-so-friendly presence of swimmer-hungry sharks - a minor detail that was mentioned to me only AFTER I had been in the water for an hour or so...). Adele is Andrew's sister and she is an ex-tour guide for the Adelaide/South Australia region - so what better person to show me round! [View Full Entry]
