Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

we got to adelaide last sunday on the Ghan train - no mum! it was cold and fairly uncomfortable! but views were good and we had a nice sunset/rise. but apart from that! we arrived early in morning sunday so just had a lazy day. on monday we were very cultured! and went to the art gallery and museum. on tuesday we went on a 3 day tour to kangaroo island...3 guesses why its famous! we saw several kangas and lots of other wildlife - possums, pengins (little), seals and sea lions, koalas, galas, and we, by chance, happened to see [View Full Entry]

rob Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide
My good mate Rob came over from Sydney to catch up and see the sights of South Australia. On the Saturday we drove out to the Yorke Peninsula and went cruising around on old Mrs Butlers property. This lady's ex-husband owned 7km of absolutely gorgeous coastline and, before he died a few years back, told her that he wanted other people to be able to enjoy it. So for $6 she allows you to go and explore this fantastically beautiful and largely undiscovered section of the coast (littered with beaches, rockpools, bush, sanddunes etc.). She even allows you to camp anywhere [View Full Entry]

A family favourite - this was an introduction for a friend to family fun day walks. We did the standard 2 hour ring to the Giant’s cave, Kookaburra, first falls, Eagle nest, and down to the base of the first falls. Link to more information about Morialta [View Full Entry]

At the top of the first waterfall

Sunday morning was again leisurely spent in Adelaide. There's not a lot to do here but I like the city. I went to the South Australia museum. It's the same type like Australian museum in Sydney - combination of nature and Aboriginal art. I was shocked by the human skeleton of Max - see the pictures - even if the guy donated his body to science it means you go and put him in a museum?? However they had one magnificent exhibition of nature & wildlife photographs from some photography contest. They had some amazing photos. I wish I could put [View Full Entry]

Admitting the racist policy

Traveling in a foreign country for a long times means also learning something about its past and its people. So I went to the migration museum of South Australia here in Adelaide. I saw there a tiny exhibition that is not really relevant to migration, but felt very relevant for me. They "celebrated" here ANZAC day 2 weeks ago, on 25/4. I didn't know that 25/4 was the day the invaded to Turkey (then the Ottoman Empire) 90 years ago in World War 1, with British and French forces. This was a horrible battle, lasting many months, with heavy losses on [View Full Entry]

There is a big joke in Australia for people who live outside Adelaide. Adelaide is a sterile, boring place. Well it just so happens that my cousin, Tracey, lives in Adelaide and, of course, protests these claims. She invited us to go there and see that it isn't as hackneyed as everyone makes out. My brother Az and I set off for Adelaide on 22nd April. Once we arrived, I was actually a little concerned if I would even recognise my cousin. (I hadn't actually seen her for 18 years) But we both seem to recognise each other and it was [View Full Entry]

Another long weekend in South Australia finds us staying in the rear shed of a friend of a friend's house in the quaint little coastal town of Victor Harbour, just south of Adelaide! Andrew, Mary, Pip, Natalie, Jean, me as well as Mr and Mrs Pip all drove down Friday afternoon for a relaxing coastal weekend of beaching, reading, drinking, early mornings and late nights... Tuesday I said goodbye to my time at The Magdalene Centre. I cannot even begin to explain how difficult it was to part will all of the relationships formed over the past three months. I was and still am so honored and blessed to have had the great pleasure of working with and for a great group of individuals. My heart overflows with thankfulness for their openess, kindness, and hospitality. I was given a proper Aussie roasting which included a beautiful breakfast meal and an Aussie farewell sing along that Peter (my supervisor) wrote for all volunteers present to sing chorus. The night before my final departure from South Australia, we engaged in a game of South Australia Trivial Pursuit. To our dismay, team Ossian and Katie answered the first two questions correctly. In one hour 3 teams had actually managed to collect a total of 7 pie pieces. It's amazing how much we have learned-some of us more than others! Saying goodbye to the Aussie 7 was even more difficult for me than exchanging farewells with TMC. Not only was I saying goodbye to my home in Adelaide and the experiences of my time there but I was also saying goodbye [View Full Entry]
