Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

4 Days and counting - Extremely Toey Hey all....For those that don't know, I'm off round the world! Chris, Brad and I are super-excited, as you'd probably expect. We leave Sunday and this is essentially a test drive of this journal site. This promises to be a lot easier, a lot more interactive and a lot cooler than emails. I'm finalising plans for the trip, making sure I get to see as many people as I can before I leave....the usual. 2 more games of soccer, 2 more shifts at work...it's getting much closer. I understand my writing style isn't to [View Full Entry]

The Boys

We did a 3 hour walk today starting at Waterfall Gully, past Chinaman’s hut and up to Mt Lofty Summit. There were heaps of people doing this tough walk. Saw robins and a small golden and black bird. We went out on a side path on the way down which was very quiet. Nice views of the city. When the sun came out it made the water shine brightly. Sunny break

Cold, windy and wet. Walking around Adelaide. Cut short. Raining hard. I woke up at 6:45 and couldn't sleep anymore. I guess I'm getting used to all of these early morning wake up calls of the last couple of weeks. I lay in bed ‘til about 8AM waiting for Coles to open up so that I could get some food for breakfast. My roommate Laura also got up and we went over there together. We bumped in to Di on the way there. Laura and I met up with Di and Anna and attempted the walking tour of Adelaide that was [View Full Entry]

Intense red sunrise. Hawker, Quorn & Adelaide. Bye to the Flinders. Another nice sleep in since it was another 8AM departure. Gotta love a good lie-in! Once on the road we did more emu spotting. Our morning stop was at the Klinyara Ruins which is a former settlement from "back in the day." To be honest I wasn't really listening to what Tanya was telling us about this sight... Since we will be arriving in Adelaide tonight and this is our last lunch together we all had left overs for lunch. I opted not to have a sandwich and helped myself [View Full Entry]

This was a sneaky walk hiding down the back of Flinders University. You went down some side streets to get to the track. It went steeply down to Sturt river which was flowing. Large rocks and gorges. Looks like the Flinders Ranges. Scramble up hill for view out to sea. Along a horse trail to suburbs and “back to where we started from”. [View Full Entry]

Sturt River

We went to Onkaparinga for a very hard walk (4 hours) with lots of very steep climbs and descents (what goes up must come down). It was very dry, but at least there was some water and we heard a lone frog. An amazing place. Must go back. Got very high and looked down into gorge, then very steep down hill. Rock hop for about an hour and then up hill again. We were sore for days after this one! Link to more Onkaparinga information [View Full Entry]

rob Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide
My good mate Rob came over from Sydney to catch up and see the sights of South Australia. On the Saturday we drove out to the Yorke Peninsula and went cruising around on old Mrs Butlers property. This lady's ex-husband owned 7km of absolutely gorgeous coastline and, before he died a few years back, told her that he wanted other people to be able to enjoy it. So for $6 she allows you to go and explore this fantastically beautiful and largely undiscovered section of the coast (littered with beaches, rockpools, bush, sanddunes etc.). She even allows you to camp anywhere [View Full Entry]

A family favourite - this was an introduction for a friend to family fun day walks. We did the standard 2 hour ring to the Giant’s cave, Kookaburra, first falls, Eagle nest, and down to the base of the first falls. Link to more information about Morialta [View Full Entry]
