Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

(Dave writes...) I'm sat in Adelaide, in Hallet Cove Beach (or thereabouts). We've done quite a lot since our last entry, I'll fill you in on our last week in Sydney first, then our week in Tasmania, before Gem covers 5 days in Melbourne and on the Great Ocean Road, and finally Adelaide where we've been staying with Gem's second cousin Sue and family for the last few days. Be warned, this is a long entry! On our penultimate weekend in Sydney we decided we had to see the administrative capital Canberra, despite some people's warnings to the contrary! We caught [View Full Entry]

Another day another state and another time zone. Yes Adelaide is only 8.5 hours ahead of England not the normal East Coast 9hours. I think it's just to make themselves feel important. Arrived here on Tuesday using the favourite airline Virgin Blue. the airport isnt the biggest place in the world with a grand total of 2 baggage belts for the entire place. Arrived and it was pissing down with rain, proper sleeting rain, felt like I was back in the UK! Hostel is huge with a ping pong table and 2 (yes count them 2) pool tables, very exciting. Preamble- the walk plan This is walk number 1 in the '50 real bushwalks around Adelaide' by George Driscoll (5th ed). It is a brand new one to us though. Part of the excitment of our walks is when we go somewhere we have never been and 'discover' it for ourselves. This walk is 16 km north of Kapunda, about 1.5 hours North of Adelaide and takes in part of the Heysen trail. It goes over private land (Huppatz family) and there is a restored hut called Marschall Hut. Hope the weather holds out. One of the big draws to Adelaide was that I have family there, on my Dad's side. I think Fiona spoke about meeting Ron and Sue Ireland in the leaving Perth post, Ron is my Dad's cousin, my Gran's maiden name was Ireland. Well Ron and his family (my Gran's brother Peter, his wife Jeanie, and their 5 kids) moved to Adelaide in 1959, the rest of the family still live there (Ron married a lass fae Perth and moved there) although sadly Peter and Jeanie have passed on, and they had another son, James, in Australia, so there's 6 kids, [View Full Entry]

Leaving home, again....
Adelaide from the hills

We woke up freezing: note to self: don't park near water! It was a gorgeous view out over the ocean though - certainly not something you get everyday! We could hear the waves during the night as well and the fact we were parked on a slope pointing towards it worried me considerably more than the boys. Guess what - the engine didn't start again. Luckily we had phone reception so we phoned roadside assistance again. Despite trying it again after 30 mins, when the guy arrived after an hour, it started with no problems. Typical. We coasted into the depot [View Full Entry]

Well we know where we're goin', but we don't know where we've been, and we know what we're knowin', but we can't say what we've seen. And we're not little children, and we know what we want, and the future is certain, give us time to work it out...... We're on the road to nowhere, come on inside, etc, etc. That's not strictly true, well maybe it was for the Talking Heads but we did really know that we were going to Adelaide and we were positive we've just left Perth. So on to South Australia, we've spent the last 4 [View Full Entry]

This walk is near Tanunda. We have done it at least 3 times now and enjoy it very much. Our favourite approach is to drive up Rifle Range road (which is absolutely magnificent) and enter the park on the nothern corner. We then start the walk on the Heysen trail which goes through private property for a little way before entering the park. At the junction, continue down the Heysen trail until you get to the lookout turn-off. We take this 20 minute detour to the lookout and usually have lunch there. We then continue along the Heysen trail along the [View Full Entry]
