Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

excitement is oozing, so is fear Wow. 18 months ago... so much has happened since. I would never have imagined to have experienced what i have recently. then opportunity came and something in me gave way to the possibilities. A few months later (a year ago now) i was working my butt off fundraising for my MS, to get that same butt off to sri lanka for a cycle challenge - 400km around the beautiful land. What an achievement i felt, given the precedent of my health and fears around... Now, since LM Education, the curtains on life have been drawn [View Full Entry]

At Dan's request, we explored the Silver mine in the Scott Creek Conservation Park today. This is a great walk/adventure for people with young children (say about 5-10 years old). Remember to bring a torch for the tunnel walk!!! How to get there.. From the city we took Unley Road, Belair Road, past Windy Point, Main Road, through to Coramandel Valley, then Cherry Gardens Road and Dorset Vale Road, which traverses the Park. In the bottom of a gully is where the car park is. The mine is called the Almanda mine, which after failed copper and ore mining in 1850, [View Full Entry]

G’Day! Sorry it’s taken so long to write but you could say I’ve been a little busy! Now have a job - got the first job I applied for! Didn’t realise it would be so quick - had been expecting (& looking forward) to a much longer break! Oh well, at least it keeps me out of the shops! Have been working for the last 4 weeks - everyone there is friendly & helpful. They take the mickey out of my accent & find it amusing when I talk of pounds & pence! Mark is still a man of leisure (no [View Full Entry]

Just a quick entry to get going.... Well it seems like an awfully big adventure to me! I'm in Adelaide, cooling off after 3 days in Singapore. And trying to get over jet lag before I run around Kangaroo Island for two weeks helping in the study of echidnas and goannas there. I guess the scientists won't be too happy if I don't wake up until mid morning! Tomorrow I am off wine tasting in the Barossa Valley - trying one of the organised tours for the first time. Although people I met in Singapore were quite negative about Adelaide, I've [View Full Entry]

On Saturday we left our campsite for the drive into Adelaide. We stopped on the way to climb to see some Aborginal rock art at the Yourambulla caves and passed through the towns of Quorn, Laura (for lunch and Aussie football throwing) and Clare. In the Clare Valley wine region we stopped at Taylor's Winery for a competition to see who could get the most value out of their 3 dollar wine-tasting charge. That evening in Adelaide we met up in the Raglan pub for a group farewell. We spent three days in the fair city of Adelaide where the outback [View Full Entry]

If you are looking at the route map you will have to zoom out twice (press the minus button on the left hand side of the map twice) to see the whole route. Planning Considering today's weather we are planning to head for a Park near Cherry Gardens called Scott Creek Conservation Park which might offer us a little protection from the elements. The last time we did this walk I remember losing the trail and it being reasonably hot and tiring, but today we are heading for a very pleasant 15 degrees with scattered showers. Information about Scott Creek Conservation [View Full Entry]

G’Day from Oz! Yip, it’s us!! Have been experiencing a few technical hitches with the Internet but we’re up & running now!! (Hopefully!) Well, what can we say? Its horrible here, the weather is awful, our accommodation is really bad, no one speaks to us, the food has given us stomach ache & we’re allergic to the beer! Not!! It’s bloody brilliant!! A cold winter’s day is 15oC, warm & sunny, & still the locals complain…should have left all the winter clothes in the UK! If this is winter what the heck is summer going to be like? Hello everyone from the hikers in SA! With Dan being sick all last week with tonsillitis and ear infections, we chose a smallish walk for today. Dan is still coughing a bit (poor dear) however he is so much better than this time last week when he wouldn't even get out of bed. A summary of the walk We went to a very small park, situated between the suburbs of Salisbury and Golden Grove called Cobblers Creek. It was hardly our normal 'escape from suburbia' as through most of the walk we could here the noise of the traffic on [View Full Entry]
