Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Next day, toured around the Barossa Valley, approx an hour from Adelaide centre. Had a great day, and it's suprising how many massive wine exporters are based here, lots of the UK's favourites: Wolf Blass, Penfolds, Lehmann Bros, Jacob's Creek, just to name the ones we made it to: Wolf Blass. Fab new cellar door and marketing suite, very corporate and caters for large groups and tours. We got a really personal service, as we arrived just as a large group left. There is a good exhibition of the man himself, Wolf Blass, who is now local to the area - [View Full Entry]

I headed out of Melbourne and on to the beautifull Great Ocean Road, we went throgh stunning coastal towns and ended up watching the sunset over the 12 apostles with a few glasses of wine! The following morning, after viewing part of the 12 apostles including Loch Ard Gorge, London Bridge and Razor Back I decided the best place to view them was from the sky, so for $60 Aus I had an 8 minute trip in a helicopter - very good fun but boy did it go fast! After lunch we headed up into the Grampian hills to a place [View Full Entry]

Introduction ... Instead of a Sunday walk this week to get our dose of 'serenity' we did a very pleasant 20 km bike ride from Semaphore to North Haven. The path was very simple, we headed from our place down Hart street to the bike track on the Esplanade foreshore and headed North towards Outer Harbour. If you have bikes, you can catch the train from Adelaide to Glanville station (Outer Harbour line) and head down Semaphore Road and down to the jetty. From here you can join the bike path. A map of the bike path (number 5 in the [View Full Entry]

Adelaide is a nice, compact City, with pretty good shopping, bars, things to do. They don't make the most of their river though. We spend the first day wandering around getting our barings, and in the evening get tickets for the Moonlight Cinema in Adelaide Botanical Gardens. We took wine, a picnic, blankets and hired 2 waterproof beanbags to sit on. The film was Chasing Amy, a cult classic starring Ben Affleck. Great evening. 16th - Debs needed a culture injection, so went to the South Australian Art Gallery[ [View Full Entry]

When we woke up in the morning we received an announcement that the train was 3 hours delayed. It turns out that what we thought was gravel the night before was actually the train hitting a cow on the tracks!! It took out the air-conditioning motor in the carriage in front of us (not ours luckily!!) and it took the train staff about an hour to remove the "carcass". Yummy. Sven's sunburn had also got worse and both of his shoulders were basically covered in blisters making it almost impossible for him to sleep. When we arrived in Adelaide we just [View Full Entry]

Not much to write here as we only stayed for one night. We arrived here in the evening from our tour of the Great Ocean Road and checked into our hostel, Cannon Street which was ok, managed to get our own room again. The first thing we noticed about Adelaide was how quiet it was in comparison to Sydney and Melbourne. We went out for some food and considering it was Saturday night there seemed to be noone around. We ended up going for a quiet drink with a nice French couple we had met on our tour. Sunday was no [View Full Entry]

We decided that it was way TOO HOT in Alice Springs, so we actually changed our flight to a day earlier and headed to Adelaide. We got there and we could definitley immediately feel the temperature difference, it was amazing!! We spent the night wandering this really cool & cutesy city. It had a great downtown filled with coffee shops, outdoor restaurants & cafes. Our real treat is getting excited about heading to the Barossa Valley for some wine tasting & most importantly a break from the hostels. A couple months ago I found this cute cottage online and reserved it [View Full Entry]

Beautiful Barossa Valley
Beautiful Barossa Valley

Hejsaa allesammen...

Once I had had a ride back to Alice Springs I just had to board the Ghan again to get to the south coast. Unfotunately the tain is only going once a week and was fully booked. After some fighting with the staff at the train station I still hoped on (a train is never fully booked...). Since some running with all the gear in the desert sun had been involved I was glad for the on-train shower. And a good-hearted Japanese traveler feed me with bread and smoked mussels. I didn't have any food or money... three cheers for the [View Full Entry]
