Work life balance?
Published: September 6th 2011Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide » SemaphoreWell, we definitely seemed to have tipped the scales much more in one direction than the other since the last few weeks in Adelaide have consisted of a whole lot of work for both of us. But it wasn't so bad (although the one week of almost 80 hours was a bit much)... And really how often in the last almost 4 years have we had to say that?! At least our location was good, our apartment was really nice, we are not in different cities, and the weather has been not to bad at all for nearing the end of winter with mostly sunny days, and the odd sprinkle here and there. We did manage to have Sundays off, or mostly off anyways. One Sunday we finally managed sneak off and we headed towards the ... read more
Where to next?
Published: August 12th 2011Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide » SemaphoreAs we promised, things have started to get a bit more exciting... Well at least a change of scenery anyways! After our trip to Melbourne , we spent a week in Sydney and Wollongong catching up on a few things we needed to do and seeing some of Brett's family, next thing we knew we were putting our caravan and truck in storage and we were on a plane and heading to Adelaide. A skateboard park was calling and since it meant going to somewhere we had never been, why not?! Actually it's going to be a busy next 5 or so months of skateparks on the road, but at least we will both be in the same spot – where that will be?? You can never be quite sure, seems to change weekly. But you ... read more
I've just arrived in Adelaide. I had a great tour from Perth to Alice Springs, met some fantastic people and saw some amazing sights! I saw a lot of desert too! As you can no doubt tell, I decided not to waste any more time in Perth, I was getting a bit sick of doing nothing, and needed to get away. The trip that I've just been on left Perth on Wednesday 19th at 7am, we traveled as far as Kellerberrin before our tour guide - Clark received news that the roads we were meant to be traveling had been washed out by floods and heavy rain! We all got back on the bus, and after a long chat we decided to press on anyway and go via the Nullaboor Plain (Nullaboor means no-trees). This meant ... read more
Adelaide International Kite Festival
Published: August 7th 2007Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide » SemaphoreWhat happened Today the hikers took to the bikes and headed down to the Adelaide International Kite Festival as part of our normal bike ride to North Haven. This Kite Festival is an annual event that takes place in Semaphore over three days and literally fills the place with colour, spectacle and lots of smiling faces. People are allowed to aggregate on the jetty and the kite flyers work on the beach. Large inflatable kites such as mermaids, killer whales, a spaceship, frill-neck lizards, frogs and the like can be seen from quite a distance. Dan says ... Hello Readers, That was a good bike ride - I have been doing it since I was 8 or something. On that dayI had double exercise with some weight training. That meant I could eat some cool stuff ... read more
Introduction The Hikers have been avoiding the bush over the last month - mostly cycling and swimming to avoid the heat and danger (fire, snakes) of the South Australian summer. But we have been missing the blog and we would like to tell you about a very special event that happened last Saturday. This was the day that the Hikers learnt the secret of making tomato sauces in their backyard. The man with the secrets (add equipment) was Rito. Together we cooked up the yummiest and freshest tasting pasta and tomato sauces ever. It was a big day with all of us putting in a 10 hour shift - but we certainly slept well on Saturday night with our bellies full of pasta and wine. I hope you enjoy the pictorial record of the event and ... read more
Bike ride from Semaphore to North Haven
Published: January 15th 2006Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide » SemaphoreIntroduction ... Instead of a Sunday walk this week to get our dose of 'serenity' we did a very pleasant 20 km bike ride from Semaphore to North Haven. The path was very simple, we headed from our place down Hart street to the bike track on the Esplanade foreshore and headed North towards Outer Harbour. If you have bikes, you can catch the train from Adelaide to Glanville station (Outer Harbour line) and head down Semaphore Road and down to the jetty. From here you can join the bike path. A map of the bike path (number 5 in the series) is available. What happened ... The weather was fabulous; overcast, calm, with the temperature peaking only at 27°C. At Semaphore we saw the Gr... read more
A local beach walk at Semaphore
Published: August 1st 2005Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide » SemaphoreFriends joined us for a walk along our local beach at Semaphore on Saturday. Semaphore is a lovely beach (yes I am biased). The water is reasonably shallow and the waves are small. This was a sunny winters day - about 17 or 18 degrees Celcius. Points of interest - the shells, the relatively empty beach, the white sand, the jetty, the Timeball tower, the Angel war memorial, The Palais, the playground, the Icecream shop in the old picture theatre, the new bike track, and the minature steam train that goes up and down the beach front (school holidays). A firm favourite :-) A web site that tells you more about Semaphore... read more
