our camp spot
This photo was taken in the water looking back at our camp site. what a beautiful spot! Ahhh Elim Beach. What can I say. I had read a little about this spot and mentioned to Gav that if we had time it might be worth a stop over. They do mention it in the books about Cape York but it's always just in passing so I wasn't set on definitely coming here.
Gavin had asked other travellers about it and one bloke told him "yep, great spot. you will find an aboriginal man named Eddie just sitting on his verandah. Speak to him." We thought it sounded interesting
We were at Cook Town and just thought "why not". As we were coming out here we were beginning to wonder just where is this elusive Elim Beach? The track just seemed to keep going and there were no signs to be seen. I was beginning to think we should've stayed at Cook Town. We hadn't booked (you can't anyway) and if there was no room it was a long drive back.
It was with great excitement that we finally saw the ocean in the distance from the top of a hill and soon after a small sign appeared pointing us in the direction of camping at
Elim Beach.
As we drove in sure enough there was Eddie sitting in his lounge chair on his verandah! There was plenty of room (only two other people there). Rates were reasonable at $10/adult, kids under 12 free. We initially booked only one night but we are now staying three! Eddie is a great bloke, at 86 he is still active and doesn't look a day over 70!
Day 1 the kids made some friends with a family that joined us through the night. The best part about this place is you could be forgiven for forgetting that you even have kids! They were busy all day and then fell into bed at night!
We are now sitting around the camp fire on the beach, the kids are out to it, Gav is thinking about making a cake in the camp oven and the funniest thing - he just got weed on by a bat! Ha ha it landed all over him. It was a cracking shot on the bats part!! Mum can't stop laughing and dad is asleep in his chair. I'm sure that bat is laughing as well.
Day 2 the first lot of
mum and dad
This photo was taken overlooking the outer suburbs of cairns. kids left and a second lot arrived so our guys were still kept occupied. Gavs butter cake turned out beautifully and we got a good break in the weather. It rained the first night here but last night and today have been gorgeous.
It's amazing how much more blue the water is when the sun is shining and the coloured sands look sparkly to! The kids have seen an amazing array of wildlife, from cranes to mud skippers, some weird worm thing (not sure what it was), stick insects, huge bats, bright green frogs, fluorescent green beetles and a whole group of funny bright blue crabs! These crabs were scurrying across the sand together in a big group and when we got closer they would bury themselves into the sand - quite funny to watch.
Tomorrow we are heading further north into Lakefield national park and eventually Musgrave before we begin our journey up The Old Telegraph Track.
Not sure what our network coverage will be like. We are looking forward to this part of our journey, after all it is why we came here in the first place.............
