G'day
We picked up our hire car in Brisbane and as advised "threw a left", at the first roundabout and headed north to our friends Bek & Steve at Hervey Bay. There we found their fabulous house with swimming pool set in 11 acres of grounds. Also we found 2 very friendly dogs and later the owners, when they returned from work.
We stayed 2 nights and as you would expect Bek and Steve made us very welcome. We did a tour of Hervey Bay and saw loads of kangaroos and taking a lead from our hosts drank plenty of beer and wine. Thanks Bek and Steve for a great stay.
We were too late to see Steve Irwin's Zoo that day but nearly finished off Terry's knees walking down to Kondalilla Waterfall. We planned to see the zoo the next day and then stay at the Gold Coast. The latter was, much to everyone's amusement as it was Indie Racing weekend, and there was no accommodation at all on the Gold Coast so we decided to stay local.
Steve Irwin's zoo turned out to be a little disappointing. We did see some strange animals we had
never seen before e.g. tasmanian devils, dingos and wombats, but the 'show' was an anti-climax. Some birds would not leave their cages and others just flew off. The one crocodile took a lot of persuading to act viciously. The next day Sunday we travelled down the coast to Byron Bay stopping for coffee on the way. We found the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast to be more pretty than expected but the best place we saw in Australia was Byron Bay, a beautiful beach and many small, wooden shops; we wished we could have stayed longer.
