Hello!! Sorry for the delay. WiFi has been pretty spotty here. So much to catch up on! Today marks our 8th day of Contiki. Morgan and I agree that we both feel like we have known the people on our tour forever! We are enjoying every second of it. After Cairns, we drove almost 10 hours to WhitSunday islands. It was here that our group split up into two groups. One group sailing the islands and the other group staying at a resort. It wasn’t until that day I found out Morgan signed us up for the 2 day sailing excursion. The sailboat was a previous competing sailboat in the region and was able to hold up to 30 people at any given time. It had a kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and bunk beds to sleep in. ... read more

The TGO and Becs are back on Hakura Capt’n Log: From June 25th till 7 August, covered 158 nautical miles around the Whitsunday Islands. Well, I must admit, I was concerned. Would I have Hakura ready for the visit of Lorraine (The TGO) and Becs (her daughter)? Without a vacuum cleaner would I be able be ready? These were the issues keeping me awake at night. Well, that plus would the weather be fine (more rain and wind were predicted for the first few days at least), and would I be able to keep my visitors happy after their recent ocean liner curse (actually they were coming directly from a 10 day voyage on one of the “Princess” ships). Would Hakura meet their elevated standards in terms of accommodation, food and service? ... read more

Capt’n Log: Distance travelled over 16 days totalled 184 nautical miles (340 km). This includes 4 days in Airlie Beach between crews (11 to 15 June). Well, after saying goodbye to Simon and Alison, I had a couple of days in Abell Point Marina, so I cleaned the boat, did the washing and restocked the larder. One of the things I enjoy in port are good fish and chips meals (though often it is fish cakes and potato cakes) and the Fish and Chip shop in the main street of Airlie Beach (surprisingly called “The Airlie Beach Fish Shop”) was a good one. So on Saturday night I was in there buying my dinner which I was going to take back to Hakura and eat with a cup of tea (again, you will be ... read more

Geo: -20.0535, 148.887Hayman Island can be reached by boat, helicopter or seaplane. We arrived by boat from Hamilton Island to which we had flown from Cairns. The steward on board, Joseph from Fiji plied us with wine during the hours trip and we met some very nice Canadians so it was a good trip. At the island we were taken by a little Disney type train to the resort and shown directly to our room. A lovely room with lounge, balcony, huge bathroom and bedroom to which the luggage arrived shortly after. The resort is a very pretty place with tropical gardens and several pools. We were put in the Lagoon end of the resort rather than the pool end although the lagoon has its own pool anyway. "For more mature guests" the young man who ... read more

We went on a two day cruise of on a boat called Avatar which was a trimaran. It was a cool boat and we got our own cabin/sleeping hole in one of the side pods. The weather was lovely and the views were beautiful. We got to go snorkelling on the part of the Great Barrier Reef which was good but I think we were spoilt in Thailand and here it didn't quite compare! The food was delicious and it was good fun living on the boat for a few days. We made a few good friends as well. At night the stars were amazing, Rachel saw a few shooting start although Paul doesn't beleive her! We went to Whitehaven Beach which is 90% silica which gives it the white appearance. You could exfoliate, brush your ... read more

Australia – Airlie Beach Whitsundays – Sailing at the Wet-Sundays, not what I was hoping for and yes I abandoned ship! The Whitsundays is renowned for being one of the most spectacular places to experience the Great Barrier reef and the normal way of doing this is to join a sailing boat and get out there for a couple of days relaxation along with getting involved with some duties on board. With this knowledge in hand I signed up to go out on an ex-racing yacht called Broomstick and I have to say I was quite excited by the prospect. I had taken sensible precautions and invested in sea sickness tablets so as far as I was concerned I was ready to go. The morning of departure arrived and I was a little disappointed to see ... read more

We left Cairns and headed straight for Airlie Beach, because few of us had flights to catch in the next few days to go back to various places, so there was not much sight-seeing time between Cairns and Airlie Beach, ideally would have loved to stop by Townsville for a few days to see the Magnetic island and do some scuba divings around there or even a sky diving adventure on Mission Beach... Might come back mid next year and do a longer trip... The drive from Cairns to Airlie beach takes about 9 hours, we got to Airlie Beach about 11pm and we headed straight for the backpacker hostel... If you are travelling and knowing that you will arrive at a town late, past 6pm, if you want to stay at a backpacker hostel for ... read more

Moving south to avoid the wet season we ventured into the outback on single track roads trying to avoid being mown down by the road trains, which at over 50 metres long travelling at 100kmph own the road and delight in terrifying the unwary tourist van. Kangaroos, Kookaburras, huge insects, baking heat, dust and humidity told us that this was the real Australia, so we headed straight back to the comfort of a beach resort at Airlie. Liz had talked up the Whitsunday islands as a once in a lifetime experience and to be honest it was. The weather was great, sailing on the racing yacht with a small group, snorkelling on the barrier reef, walking through the rainforest was worth the whole trip alone. There was the downside of sleeping on a 2 foot wide bed ... read more

Hi everyone, we are currently in Cairns waiting to check in to our hostel and very tired after the best weekend ever! If you ever get to go to Oz then we would recommend this and go on the bommerang. We got Airlie Beach on the 22nd and checked in our luggage etc and made our way to the boat for 13:45. By this time we had met an Irish guy called Eddie, who lives in Melbourne and 2 English guys called Matt and Lee, who are at present travelling but may look to move to New Zealand. We all got on to the boat and met the crew - Max, Kane, Jordan and Renee. We were shown a few sailing techniques and off we went. We first of all went to Black Island and done ... read more
