After being assured that the bridge at Surat was not underwater, we headed for our next stop at Roma. The Balonne River was lapping underneath the Surat Bridge as we drove over it. Surat was once a Changing Post for Cobb & Co coaches. We arrived at our first Farm Stay, Ups and Downs, and after setting up, walked around with the Caretakers feeding the farm animals. We sat around the camp fire at night and chatted with other guests. Weather wasn't so great at Roma, with misty rain falling the majority of the time.... read more

It was a short drive from our free camp to Hebel where we needed to refuel. While filling the 4WD we could hear loud Mooing sounds and crashing noises. Looking over we saw a cattle truck road train with very excited cattle, mooing and kicking at the sides of the truck. Initially we were puzzled but then we came to the conclusion they had only recently been loaded and had not yet settled down. Joan was also puzzled as to why the ladies toilets were locked but not the mens. Leaving the town we saw a popular area to free camp next to the local river. That needs to get added to “Camps Australia Wide”, so we made our own addition for any future trip to this area. This morning we saw a variety of wildlife. ... read more

Due to a fair amount of cloud cover the sunrise was not going to present us with any colour worthy of a photo and at 0610 we were off heading to Longreach. We beat the sunrise on this occasion but after about 15 minutes it poked through a little gap in the cloud and was aiming straight in our eyes. Not often I hit the road this early in the morning but in these parts it is very flat and sparsely vegetated and you can see for miles. We did want to reach a tyre store in Longreach at the opening of business which I suspected would be either 0800 or 0830 at the latest, we were keen to get the flat repaired and set about covering some k’s. All going well we could make it ... read more

When in Roma... do what the Romans do How can 2 months have passed since the last blog entry? Some of our readers have complained about these blogs being too verbose! Remember that this is our way of documenting our experience so that when it’s all over we can re-live it. This one is a biggy. To read/see the abridged version, please just see the photos with their descriptions. Extra photos at the bottom of this edition. "What happens in Roma?" we hear you ask! Our initial plan upon our arrival in Roma was to head straight to Carnarvon Gorge. However, on being promised so many job opportunities, we decided to try our luck. Within a week, Wendy had a trial at a coffee shop and was up and running. Peter was encouraged by the amount ... read more

When have we ever had to have an excuse to go exploring? SO when Nikki announced she would be visiting Brisbane as part of her round the world trip we started to plan a holiday that would take us to new places of interest aswell as some old haunts. The trick was to time the travelling within a school holiday and Nikki's busy schedule and to try to pack in as much as possible in as short a time! So with research complete and places booked we set off early Friday morning to drive the 6 hour journey to Roma, stopping off at places of interest on the way. I can here you say what on earth is there to see going to Roma...despite the unispiring drive and scenery we stopped at Toowoomba for a coffee ... read more

Well, we're still in Roma. Yesterday was supposed to be our last day here, but Ryan's work has been delayed due to the weather. He is loving the work and learning about the specifics of asphalt. With luck we'll be ready to pack up and ship out on Wednesday, I'm not holding my breath though. One big issue with the work delay is the impact it has on our travels. We want to be back in the land of Brisvegas a week before Christmas, so this changes our route. I think we're going to scratch the plan to travel through Surat, St George, Goondiwindi etc and just retrace our steps to Brisbane. We might get to stop and investigate Toowoomba (which would be nice) and the latest Caravan Ontour magazine has a great article listing things ... read more

Most of this week has been wet, which is a fantastic change from the heat, but you know how it is when you have too much of one weather type... you start wishing for the opposite. We were all been getting a bit of cabin fever, Noah more so. He was stuck inside far too much for his liking and I've come to the conclusion that he needs a rain coat and hat to go with his gumboots, so that he can get outside when it's drizzling or spitting. Today has been the first blue sky we have seen in about 4 days, so I put on Noah's gumboots and he went and had some fun splashing in a few puddles. In the afternoon I thought we'd go and check out this big undercover playground that ... read more

We planned on staying in another free camp on Friday night, at the Wallumbilla Show Ground, it is a 48 hour camp with water and free power, but there was no consistant mobile signal so we decided to head straight to Roma. After checking out 2 of the caravan parks, we figured it wouldn't hurt to drive out to the Meadowbank Farmstay and see what it was like. It probably wouldn't have been bad, but there wasn't much shade and we needed supplies, so the decision was made that Roma was the place to set up. So, we settled on staying at a caravan park that has a small playground and pool.... the weekly rate is comparable to the other 2 parks, but they charge an extra $5.00 a night for children 1 and over! It ... read more
