I've had to get creative with titles for the different posts, since I've been writing from the same place for over 3 months now. It's not that easy writing about everyday life if I'm not traveling and still trying to write interesting enough posts for my family to read back home - Challenge accepted. In most of the other posts, I've written what I've done day by day. In this one, I'm going to try a different aproach and write about things I remember about this week, not worrying too much about the chronological order. This last week (since August 25th) has mostly been a big blur of working and diving, with some days better than others, of course. I can recall a couple of really good days in which I had introductory divers who were ... read more

Tuesday and Wednesday of last week I had introductory divers. On Tuesday I only dove the first site and in the second site (Two Tone) I had time to snorkel and to go looking for sharks, but without luck. I didn't do much in the evening. Wednesday was a bit busier and I had 5 intro divers, one of them for the 3 sites. They were all pretty good, so I didn't have to struggle much with them. In the evening, I had a few drinks with Melina, Anthony, Jessie, Bruce and Giselle. Melina invited them over, because she was really happy about 3 job oportunities that opened up for her (in a boat and 2 restaurants), after having had quit her job recently and she wanted to celebrate (a few days later she took two ... read more

Despite having been in Port Douglas for a while (at least a few months), settled down with a job, etc., I think I've always found something out of the ordinary routine to write about. This is no exception. I had Wednesday 1st of August off which was a good thing, due to a back sprain that was killing me, so it was a good day to just stay in pajamas and do nothing. In the evening I went over to my neighbors'/coworkers' house (Bruce and Giselle), because they did a farewell dinner for Florence (French instructor in Calypso), who was leaving Port Douglas to travel around Australia for a while, starting in Cairns. We were 7 in total (the 3 mentioned previously, plus Kane, Alex, Jessie and myself). It was a nice, chilled out dinner (we ... read more

We woke op early to get ready to for the trip to the Great Barrier Reef. At 08:00 we arrived at the marina and boarded the Poseidon catamaran. We met a Dutchman, Herald, who lives and works as a dive master in Port Douglas and we had a nice chat with him. The weather was beautiful with clear blue skies and warm sunshine. On the way out to the reef we stopped a couple of times to watch humpback whales. It was a beautiful sight to see the whales bask in the sun and splash with their fins. On the reef we stopped at three different sites to watch the varied marine life. We saw hard and soft corral, anemones, and fish of all kind from small guppy like fish to a shark and a moray ... read more

We have spent two days at the beach in Port Douglas. It has been very nice to just swim in the ocean and lay on the beach. The boys got a beach rugby ball and played a lot with it. They also rented a large rubber tyre and a paddleboard and had a great time with it. We ended the day at a nice fish restaurant and tried some local fish and seafood. Among other things we had bay bug, a kind of clawless crayfish, which tasted very well. Tomorrow we will go to see the Great Barrier Reef and do some snorkelling.... read more

From Saturday 21st of July until the next Monday I worked on the boat "Calypso" doing "Discover Scuba Diving" (DSD) for people who haven't dived before. Not much to tell there, as it's my everyday job and nothing out of the ordinary happened. Monday night, Jessie (my housemate) and I were invited to Bruce and Giselle's house to have a few drinks. They also invited Kane and Alex, a couple who just started working in Calypso (He's from NZ and she's Aussie). The next day Kane and Alex moved in with Bruce and Giselle for a while until they find a place to stay. Tuesday, I worked as host/snorkeler (which involves mainly working in the galley serving the food, doing dishes, serving coffee, etc., plus helping people who have never snorkeled before, doing snorkel tours, etc.). ... read more

The weather was fair this morning, nice and warm compared to the last couple of weeks in the south. Curt and I went for a run on the beach and then we all had breakfast in the restaurant. As we ate we looked at things to do around Port Douglas and decided to go visit a rainforest and scenic railroad. For a visit to the Great Barrier Reef, which we really want to do, we need to book a few days in advance. It will have to be later in the week. The rainforest tour begun with a sky-rail, a type gondola, taking us above and through the rainforest canopy and ascending some 300 meters up into the highlands. There we had two stops to watch specific plants and we took a half-hour walk with an ... read more

Alarm went at 3:15, there was no traffic as we drove to the airport and only 6 degrees outside. The check in went well and we managed to score a nice cappuccino before we took off. On the plane we all fell asleep again and arrived in Cairns at 9:15 am. On our way to our resort we made a stop at a Crocodile farm/zoo. It was very impressive to see how big they get and to learn about the different types of crocks. The most fearsome is the Salty, which is not really a correct name for it since they, like all crocodiles, mainly live in fresh water. The oldest and largest at the farm was a male of about 5.7 meters. He is the third largest in the world and has no teeth ... read more

I haven't posted in a couple of weeks, so here it goes: a lot of the things I've done are pretty much the same rutine I've had for almost two months (concerning work), but combined with some other activities. One of the reasons I waited to post, was because I needed to get photos that other people had taken so I could add them to this post. Saturday 7th of July I had the day off and really didn't do much that day. The weather wasn't really good, so I just stayed home and slept until late. Then, I worked 8 days in a row (from Sunday 8th to Sunday 15th). All days were really different, with some of them being very relaxed, with only a few divers and others with up to 24 divers in ... read more

As far as work this week went, I worked on Calypso from Monday to Thursday and luckily enough, I got to take to certified divers those 4 days. The weather conditions weren't very good and we had about 30 knots of wind all those days, which meant a lot of sea sick people puking their guts out (and we had a full boat all 4 days; about 85 people). In all, work wasn't that bad, but it was very tiring doing 3 dives everyday in those conditions. Of all the dives I did, I especially enjoyed diving in the site called "Two Tone", because of the varied scenery and because it has some very strong currents in some places which gives it an extra challenge. In one of the dives there, I saw the resident grey ... read more
